However, it was a false alarm and the pair resumed events after a brief pause.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the incident, according to Reuters.

Charles and Camilla travelled to Jersey as part of their first visit to the Channel Islands — which are Crown Dependencies off the northwest coast of France — since the King acceded to the throne.

The couple kicked-off their tour by attending a special sitting of the States Assembly and the Royal Court.

The crowd braved heavy showers and roared as the King and Queen arrived in a purple Bentley.

On Tuesday, Joel Dry joined Nat Barr and Michael Usher on Sunrise, speaking about the incident.

“(It’s) all part of the King’s return to more public-facing duties, and all was going well until this moment,” Dry said.

“Queen Camilla stepping away to tour an exhibition. She was given an ice-cream to try, and at that point some of her security detail move over to her, tell her something and then guide her away, past some waiting crowds waiting for a meet and greet.

“For a moment she looked quite panicked and taken into a hotel room where the King had already been whisked away. There was some sort of alleged security threat that the detail was dealing with.

“In the end, it turned out to be a false alarm, thankfully. But this does show the sense of heightened security threat that we are living in at the moment, particularly after the incident with Donald Trump in the US.

“So the security detail taking no risks, acting first and then assessing after. The couple were able to continue with their tour. Things got a bit more light-hearted because they were in Jersey.

“The Queen was gifted a herd of jersey cows. Some of them putting on a bit of a frisky performance, which the Queen had a bit of a chuckle.

“So a day that started out with a concerning element all went a bit more light-hearted and The King and Queen were able to get on and enjoy what was the first visit by a monarch to the island of Jersey in almost two decades.”

The royals will travel to the neighbouring island of Guernsey on Tuesday.

The King is known as the Duke of Normandy on the Channel Islands — dating from when William the Conqueror’s son, Henry I, seized the Duchy of Normandy, including the islands, in 1106.
