The Ian Furness Show

THE IAN FURNESS SHOW PRESENTED BY SNOQUALMIE CASINO, SEATTLE’S CLOSET SPORTSBOOK

Furness Show 9-4: Jake Bobo, Mike Sanford, Steve Palazzolo, Mike Holmgren.

Furness Show 9-3: Joe Sheehan, Cougar Roundtable.

It's Groundhog Day all over again with the Mariners and nothing seems to be changing. At what point do we actually root against the team? It doesn't sound like they're ready to get rid of Jerry Dipoto or sell the team. So, what needs to happen for things to change?  The Seahawks are an example of a team that doesn't stay complacent, as evidenced by the firing of Pete Carroll. Early indications are positive for this season. We take a listen to Jarran Reed and Tyler Lockett, as they spoke to the media yesterday. What does this team really look like? Both seem enthused about the newness they're seeing with the team.  There are a few numbers the Seahawks can flip this year that would make a serious difference compared to last year.  Joe Sheehan, The Joe Sheehan Newsletter gives us a look around MLB and who's standing out during the final month of the season. The Mariners still have a chance to go on a heater, but also have potential to swirl the drain. Can they make up three games before they play the Astros?  How long are you - as a fan - willing to give the Mariners before you start rooting against them?  The Daily Power Play! The Oilers gave Leon Draisaitl a historic $112M deal.  he Cougar Roundtable! Alex Brink and Mkristo Bruce react to the Cougars' dominating 70-30 win in week one over Portland State. John Mateer isn't just a quarterback who can run - he's a running back and a quarterback. The defense has some cleaning up to do in the tackling department, but things are looking pretty good.

Furness Show 9-2: Hugh Millen, Molly Whop Monday, Mike Sando.

What a weekend for the Mariners - and not in the good way.   Fact or Fiction is back! As we prepare for the Seahawks season, we revisit Hugh Millen's breakdown of what the Ryan Grubb offense has to offer.    We continue with a preview of the Seahawks and listen into what Hugh thinks the defense will look like under Mike Macdonald. How much will it look like Baltimore's?   Mollywhop Monday! Chris Crawford and Nathan Bishop react to the weekend series and what we've seen of late. They're both exhausted by what we're seeing and tell us why.   Mollywhop continues and it's a special mix of anger and apathy. We give Mariners fans the therapy session they need.   The Astros aren't doing the Mariners any favors. And Detroit...is actually ahead of Seattle in the wild card.   Mike Sando, The Athletic gives Ian some insight on the Seahawks' strength of schedule. How might it benefit Seattle this season and what pitfalls could we see?

Furness Show 8-30: Heidi Watney, Danny O'Neil, Rob Rang

Kicking off the long holiday weekend. Huskies and Cougs start their 2024 campaign tomorrow, but you will only be able to watch one of them.

Heidi Watney, Apple TV joins the show to discuss the Mariners’ home stretch of the season before they play on Apple TV tonight. Where does she see the Mariners ending up at the end of the year? T-Mobile Park may be deterring hitters from joining the club. Ty France joined Heidi following the trade with only good things to say about the city but maybe a bit too much information from the analytics group. Where do the players ultimately stand on the analytics side of baseball? Globalization of baseball.

The Mariners have a soft schedule coming up but are still in a bad spot with Houston 4 games up and multiple teams to jump in the Wild Card race.

Danny O’Neil, The Dang Apostrophe!, joins the show to discuss the Mariners. The team is 4-2 under Dan Wilson, and runs per game have increased. Many of which came in a single game but take what we can get. How are the Mariners under .500 this season with Logan Gilbert on the mound? We touch on the systemic issues that seem to be within the Mariners’ organization and fans looking to move on from not only Jerry Dipoto and ownership. Danny says ownership is the teams biggest downfall and has kept them from success on the field. Does it mean something that Scott Servais did not mention Dipoto in his good bye statement?

The city continues to sour on the Mariners “leadership”. However, one thing we know if that winning can cure all.

Daily Power Play,  Awful news out of the NHL as Johnny Gaudreau and his brother passed away last night after being struck by a drunk driver. John Forslund spoke with Mike Benton about the tragedy and his memories of Gaudreau.

ROB RANG, FOX SPORTS.COM AND SCOUT FOR THE BC LIONS, joins for the first time this season to talk the upcoming CFB season, and the massive kickoff weekend coming up. He touches on Seahawks’ draft picks to this point and last night’s games including Colorado’s victory over North Dakota State which featured Travis Hunter showing he may be the best player in the country albeit in a tight victory. Where does Shadeur Sanders rank amongst QBs going into the draft after this season?

Furness Show 8-29: Stewart Mandel, Corbin Smith, Brandon Funston.

The Mariners continue to be exactly what they've always been. It's exciting being on the precipice of college football - but where will you watch it this weekend?  Stewart Mandel, The Athletic breaks down what we saw in week zero in college football and what to expect this weekend. He runs us through the various ups and downs we've seen throughout conference realignment. Plus, how different will viewing be for the college football television audience?  Anders and Jess try to convince Ian to cut the cord.  Corbin Smith, Locked on Seahawks gives his first blush reaction to the Seahawks' final roster and their offense has some solid weapons. He is most impressed by Laviska Shenault this preseason. On the defensive side of the ball, there weren't a ton of surprises. The biggest news items are Uchenna Nwosu not being on injured reserve and Abe Lucas being out for the first four games. The NFC West is going to be rough this year, but the improved defense should push them into the playoffs.  The Mariners did add this offseason, but they also deleted due to financial issues. Joe Sheehan had some pointed words about the financial situations.  The Daily Power Play! Ian has some Kraken news that television viewers will want to hear.  Brandon Funston, The Athletic kicks off the unofficial start to the weekend! We're approaching fantasy draft deadlines and Brandon gives his biggest surprises from the NFL cutdowns and what it could mean for your roster. Finally, listeners have the opportunity to ask him anything and everything.

Furness Show 8-28: Joe Sheehan, Steve Palazzolo, Mike Holmgren.

The Mariners are the same team under new management, regardless of the changes made. Did Edgar even want the position he now holds? Ian thinks there's a chance the M's sneak into the postseason.  Joe Sheehan, The Joe Sheehan Newsletter gives his first impressions of the Mariners' managerial moves. How sustainable is Seattle's style of winning right now? He describes the missed opportunities we've seen throughout this season. Will the Mariners cut payroll once again? Joe doesn't understand the way the team is managing their finances.
The situation the Mariners' front office is putting the coaching staff in is unfair, no matter who is at the helm.  Steve Palazzolo, The 33rd Team joins Ian to discuss the Seahawks' official roster and what impressed him in Seattle over the preseason. In short, he's impressed so far. What similarities in the Seahawks' defense does he see to what was done in Baltimore? Finally, what do the moves they made during cutdown tell him about the Mike Macdonald era?  Washington plays their first Big 10 game this weekend, but you might not even be able to watch it. What's going on? Comcast/Xfinity are a really bad business partner.  Ian tells you something good.  Headlines!  Mike Holmgren, Legendary Coach tells us what it's like to go through cutdown day from a coach's perspective. He wasn't surprised by anything the Seahawks did but acknowledges that it's a difficult process. Coach says it's a less dramatic process than people think. He gives his evaluation of the roster. He also has high expectations of Ryan Grubb.

Furness Show 8-27: Mike Benton in for Ian, Hugh Millen, Aaron Levine.

Mike Benton in for Ian! Seahawks are making moves and we await the final cuts. The Mariners are so far, so good under Dan Wilson - but is it appeasing the fans?  Hugh Millen joins Benton for some instant reaction to what the Seahawks have done so far at the 53-man roster cutdown deadline. PJ Walker is cut, but Hugh sees him landing on the practice squad. He's also vehement that there should be three quarterbacks dressed for every game. Finally, why Florida can give you an idea of what we might see at UW this year.  Following the injury to Uchenna Nwosu, should blocking rules change? Also, how much more patient can we expect Mariners fans to be?  Aaron Levine, FOX 13 joins us with his latest thoughts on the moves the Seahawks made so far, plus what he sees in the Mike Macdonald defense. Plus, the Mariners and the broken promises of Jerry Dipoto - what's next? Aaron thinks the team very much needs to take a look at his role at the end of this season. What will change the tides with the fans?

Furness Show 8-26: Hugh Millen, Molly Whop Monday, Mike Sando.

BREAKING: We have some updated injury news regarding Uchenna Nwosu and he'll miss several weeks after injuring his knee on Saturday.  The Mariners took two of three from the Giants over the weekend and while the games were positive and scrappy - they did the same thing under Servais.  Hugh Millen, Hard Core Football! Hugh joins us to break down the Seahawks final preseason game. He tells us Geno Smith is properly ranked as a 'median' level quarterback. Hugh tells us the complexity behind playing quarterback and why it's such a difficult position to play AND evaluate. Plus, changes in the red zone.  Hugh Millen continues to react to the news Uchenna Nwosu will miss several weeks. How impactful will his absence be?  Mollywhop Monday! Chris Crawford and Nathan Bishop join Ian to give their thoughts on the Mariners first series under Dan Wilson as a manager. While they succeeded over the weekend, was their style any different that it was under Servais?  Mollywhop continues.  What is the bigger issue with the Mariners between Jerry Dipoto and the Mariners?  Mike Sando, The Athletic joins us to break down his quarterback tiers, just released today. Where does Geno Smith rank? Sando takes us on a trip around the league to tell us what the quarterbacks look like in advance of this season. He also tells us where those facing off against the Seahawks rank.

Furness Show 8-23: Mayor IPA! Danny O'Neil, Kym Hilinski, Rob Rang and Brandon Huffman

Ian is live from Georgetown Brewery for the special release of the Mayor IPA! He tells us why this is so important, as well as how may people it impacts. Danny O'Neil, The Dang Apostrophe! Danny  gives his honest reaction to the Mariners move to fire Scott Servais and what really needs to happen for this team to have actual success.  Why is Jerry safe? Danny doesn't think the team is serious about winning if they keep Dipoto. Danny shares some impressions of the new Seahawks. Matt Connelly, Georgetown Brewing sits down with Ian to talk about the amazing things that are coming out of the brewery and the causes they support. Stewart Mandel, The Athletic joins Ian to kick off the college football season! He takes us through the new look of college football, what the Big 10 looks like now and a little something that might benefit Washington State and Oregon State come bowl season.
Ashley Ryan is at Georgetown! She joins Ian to discuss the fallout from the Mariners' decision to fire Scott Servais. Ashley is seeing a glass half full. Kym Hilinski joins Ian to discuss how important the Mayor IPA is to the causes she's working for, specifically Hilinski's Hope. She's in Pullman right now and tells us what she's doing to help student athletes. Rob Rang, FOX Sports.com and BC Lions Scout joins us as we head into the final week of the Seahawks' preseason. He gives his insights on what he's seen from Sam Howell and why he's been unfairly criticized. Plus, and inside look at the offensive line. What does he make of the Darrell Taylor trade, as well Michael Jackson? Rob tells us more about Michael Barrett. Brandon Huffman, 247Sports sits down with Ian to talk about the Avery Strong Foundation, and all the good that comes out of a tragic situation. He lost his daughter and is fighting to make sure other parents don't have to go through what his family did. Plus, some talk about the rebuild the Huskies are experiencing.

Furness Show 8-22: Mariners firing Servais, Mollywhop, Chuck Powell, Corbin Smith and Brandon Funston

EMERGENCY MOLLYWHOP! Chris Crawford and Nathan Bishop give their initial reactions to the Mariners' reported firing of Scott Servais. Crawford thinks they're replacing him with Dan Wilson to do everything they can to keep people coming to the ballpark, while failing. Nathan agrees and doesn't know how we can even fairly evaluate Servais in the circumstances in which he's operated. Chris and Nathan remain with us to react to Dan Wilson taking over for the Mariners, and Chris is surprised they didn't go with Manny Acta or Kristopher Negron. This just points to keeping butts in seats. Nathan is watching other moves being made, as in Edgar Martinez joining the staff. These moves are clearly being made over Jerry Dipoto's head. What makes a good manager? Scott Servais was put in an impossible position, in more than one way. Chris and Nathan continue the hour MollyWhop marathon to tell us what kind of team Dan Wilson is inheriting right now. Plus, how safe is Jerry's job right now? Corbin Smith, Locked on Seahawks gives his first reaction to the Seahawks trading cornerback Michael Jackson to the Panthers for linebacker Michael Barrett. The depth at linebacker is a good add, while the Seahawks had an embarrassment of riches in the defensive backfield, especially at corner. Chuck Powell joins Ian in studio, after having predicted the Servais firing if the Dodgers series went the way it did this week. Neither of the guys want anyone to lose a job, but this move just makes sense. How much blame should be put on Servais or Dipoto for the careers that came to Seattle to die? Chuck gives Jerry Dipoto a lot of credit for what he's done here - if you want him out, be careful what you wish for. An adequate offense should be enough for this team to be a perennial postseason contender. We begin the cavalcade of fans weighing in on the Mariners. Brandon Funston, The Athletic kicks off the unofficial start to the weekend. Today, we talk quarterbacks as you prepare for your fantasy draft. Listeners let loose on the firing of Scott Servais, and boy do we have a lot.
