Ben Lovejoy is a British technology writer who started his career on PC World and has written for dozens of computer and technology magazines, as well as numerous national newspapers, business and in-flight magazines. He has also written two technothriller novels , a romcom novel, and an SF novella series.

He is old enough to have owned the original Macintosh. He currently owns an M1 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air 11, 12.9-inch iPad Pro (LTE 256GB), iPhone 13 Pro Max (256GB), Dell Ultrawide 49-inch monitor, an Apple Watch (Series 4 WiFi) and multiple HomePods – he suspects it might be cheaper to have a cocaine habit than his addiction to all things anodised aluminum.

He thinks wires are evil and had a custom desk made to hide them, known as the OC Desk for obvious reasons.

He’s known for his op-ed and diary pieces, exploring his experience of Apple products over time, for a more rounded review:

He considers 1000 miles a good distance for a cycle ride and Chernobyl a suitable tourist destination. What can we say, he’s that kind of chap.

He speaks fluent English but only broken American, so please forgive any Anglicised spelling in his posts.

If @benlovejoy-ing him on twitter, please follow him first so that he can DM you if appropriate. If you have information you can pass on, you can also email him. If you would like to comment on one of his pieces, please do so in the comments – he does read them all.

Here’s why the iPhone 16’s Capture button will be a bigger deal than it sounds

Here's why the iPhone 16's Capture button will be a bigger deal than it sounds | Nikon SLR shown

One of the expected features of the iPhone 16 is a dedicated Capture button for photos and videos. CAD drawings and dummy models suggest all four models will get the button.

That might not sound like too big a deal, especially for those who own an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, that already has an Action button configurable to activate the camera. However, if it works as we’re expecting, then it could turn out to be the main feature which persuades me to upgrade from my 15 Pro Max …

Many of the biggest websites have opted out of Apple Intelligence training

Many of the biggest websites have opted out of Apple Intelligence training | Do Not Enter sign

Generative AI systems are trained by letting them surf the web to scrape content. Apple allows publishers to opt out of its scraping, and a new report says that many of the biggest websites have specifically opted out of Apple Intelligence training.

This includes both Facebook and Instagram, as well as many high-profile news and media sites like The New York Times and The Atlantic

Sign in with Apple was available on multiple deepfake nudes sites

Sign in with Apple available on multiple deepfake nudes sites | Apple graphic on red background

Sign in with Apple was launched back in 2019 as a faster, more convenient, and privacy-focused way of registering with an app or website. But a new report says that it was being offered by multiple deepfake nudes sites.

The inclusion of sign-in options for Apple, Google, and others has been used to create a veneer of respectability for the distasteful sites used to create non-consensual nude images …

NotePin is the latest pointless AI wearable that should be an app

Plaud NotePin is the latest pointless AI wearable | Promo images

I’d hoped the era of pointless AI wearables was at an end after the Humane Ai pin saw its returns exceed its sales, and MKBHD called the Rabbit R1 “barely reviewable,” but it appears not. The NotePin is the latest nonsensical AI wearable that should be an app.

Plaud has already launched an AI voice recorder that has to be paired with an iPhone that could do the same job without the extra hardware. Not content with this, it has now announced a wearable that has to be paired with an iPhone that could do the same job without the extra hardware …

AT&T 911 outage sees company fined $950k; yesterday’s outage now fixed

AT&T 911 outage sees company fined $950k | Ambulance driving to an emergency

An AT&T 911 outage back in 2023 has seen the company fined almost a million dollars. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says that the carrier not only failed to provide adequate backup coverage, but also didn’t let 911 centers know what had happened.

If this all sounds familiar, it is. The carrier was previously fined $5.25M for 911 outages back in 2017, and may well face a further sanction for another outage earlier this year

One big reason you may want to hold out for the iPhone 17

One big reason you may want to hold out for the iPhone 17 | iPhone 17 render

If you don’t upgrade every year, and were planning on buying an iPhone 16, a leaker with a solid track record has just given a potentially good reason to hold out for the iPhone 17 instead.

According to their Weibo post, the iPhone 17 will get 12GB of RAM, over the 8GB of the iPhone 16 line-up, and suggested this will offer a significant benefit when using Apple Intelligence features …

Apple is replaying its Jony Ive trick to manage Maestri’s departure

Apple is replaying its Jony Ive trick to manage Maestri's departure | A magician executing an illusion

Apple yesterday announced Luca Maestri’s upcoming departure from his long-held role as the company’s chief financial officer (CFO), with the relatively unknown Kevan Parekh replacing him.

It’s no coincidence that Apple made the announcement on the same day it issued invitations to its Glowtime event on September 9, and it very much looks like the company is revisiting its playbook for managing the departure of former design chief Jony Ive

Apple’s Glowtime event creates big expectations – how will it deliver?

Apple’s iPhone event surprises

The iPhone 16 line-up will be unveiled on Monday, and Apple’s Glowtime event name and graphics seem to be pretty clear pointers to a focus on Apple Intelligence. Anyone who is running the current iOS 18.1 beta will have instantly recognised the event graphics as replicating the colorful glow seen when using Siri.

The problem for Apple, however, is that the cool animation is almost the only thing that’s new about Siri, and that isn’t going to change for quite some time …

Maybe the most realistic Shot on iPhone video – stock app, no external lenses

Maybe the most realistic Shot on iPhone video | Sunset framegrab

When Apple and others share Shot on iPhone videos, they often stretch the definition of the term, using iPhones in rigs which include high-end external lenses, cinema dollies, uber-expensive lighting, and other kit that would make the results unachievable by the average user.

But tech reviewer Faruk has showcased what can be achieved using only the stock camera app, with no additional lenses, gimbals, or filters …

Apple thinks two-thirds of iPhone 16 sales will be Pro models, says supply-chain report

Apple thinks two-thirds of iPhone 16 sales will be Pro models | Periscope lens example shown

Component orders placed by Apple suggest the company thinks two-thirds of iPhone 16 sales will be one of the two Pro models, according to a new supply-chain report.

The clue is that the periscope lens currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max is this year being extended to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model too, so Apple’s orders for this part give insight into the company’s expectations …

Swappable optics could be the perfect accessory for an iPhone Air

Swappable optics could be the perfect accessory for an iPhone Air | Conventional lenses, and swappable optics module

Suggestions that Apple plans to launch an iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air are gaining ground, with most reports now pointing to a compromise device.

One big compromise we might see is for Apple to limit the model to a single camera – but there may be a creative solution to this problem, which could give us the equivalent of an entire camera bag full of lenses right there in our pocket …
