ASUC is a group of passionate elected and appointed officials, as well as hired interns and staff who represent the original University of California’s large and diverse student population.

OUR MISSION.

The ASUC advocates for students on a University, local, state, and national level and represents the student body on administrative campus committees, in addition to controlling funding for student clubs and organizations, providing resources and student programming, overseeing commercial activities and student services including the Cal Student Store and Lower Sproul Plaza in partnership with the ASUC Student Union.

“..that we may, through independent action and in concert with other constituencies of the university and community, participate in the formation and the improvement of educational programs, protect full freedom of assembly and expression in the university community, articulate and represent the student interest in the governance of the campus, provide services and coordinate activities for students, and advance our common interests and concerns as students and as members of the civic community, do hereby ordain and establish this Constitution."

HISTORY

Created in 1887, the ASUC has a rich history in serving the students of UC Berkeley, and has changed in many ways since its founding. With over 1,300 staff members, it provides every kind of service imaginable, to the student body.

Founded in 1887, the ASUC was the original students’ association of the University of California when Berkeley was the only UC campus. During the early twentieth century the ASUC controlled a wide range of student services- anything on campus that was not related to academics was run by ASUC including student conduct, the student store, Cal Athletics, and all student organization services.

Today, the ASUC continues to lead the way in how students’ association represent, advocate, and serve students on campuses in the UC system, California, and the nation.

ADVOCACY & POLICY-CHANGING

The ASUC is the driving voice at Berkeley for student-led change both on and off-campus.

HISTORY

Founded in 1887, the ASUC was the original students’ association of the University of California when Berkeley was the only UC campus. During the early twentieth century the ASUC controlled a wide range of student services- anything on campus that was not related to academics was run by ASUC including student conduct, the student store, Cal Athletics, and all student organization services. After World War II, the ASUC relinquished some activities to the University, holding on the student services relocated to the new Lower Sproul complex. In the 90s, the ASUC joined an agreement with the University deciding on the current structure of shared governance over commercial activities and student services. Today, the ASUC continues to lead the way in how students’ association represent, advocate, and serve students on campuses in the UC system, California, and the nation.

“We, the students of the Berkeley campus of the University of California, as an autonomous constituency of the university community, do provide by this Constitution a students’ association committed to effective student participation in all areas of student concern, that we may, through independent action and in concert with other constituencies of the university and community, participate in the formation and the improvement of educational programs, protect full freedom of assembly and expression in the university community, articulate and represent the student interest in the governance of the campus, provide services and coordinate activities for students, and advance our common interests and concerns as students and as members of the civic community, do hereby ordain and establish this Constitution.
