For #WorldPatientSafetyDay, we are improving diagnosis and care for children who experience Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes or Antibiotic use. The National Paediatric Applied Research Translation Initiative (N-PARTI) is an Australia-wide #NHMRC funded collaboration of researchers, clinicians, and consumers. We aim to improve adherence to best practice care for childhood #Asthma, #Type1Diabetes, and #Antibiotic use. Our impact will be healthier children and an Australian primary healthcare system that is empowered to rapidly implement evidence-based change. Project lead is Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite. For #WorldPatientSafetyDay, we are improving diagnosis for patient safety by using near real-time electronic general practice data to establish effective care and best-practice policy for COVID19 This project is using an innovative secure and comprehensive digital health platform, Population Level Analysis & Reporting (POLAR) to: - Generate evidence to support the implementation and sustainability of exemplar general practice and population health initiatives and programs - Examine Long COVID and identify what can be done in Australian general practice to best care for patients, both from current symptom management and preventative care - Provide timely data/information to the GP desktop via POLAR to highlight patients in need of care and; - Co-design strategies for PHNs to highlight the breadth of key issues across their practices. For #WorldPatientSafetyDay, we are celebrating Care My Way The Care My Way codesigned tool contributes to improved diagnosis among people from culturally and linguistically diverse (#CALD) backgrounds with #cancer by providing GPs with up to date information about their circumstances and care. With advancements in the detection and treatment of cancers, survivors are often navigating additional health conditions alongside their cancer. Tools such as Care My Way provide important, patient-led approaches to support the diagnosis of emerging health conditions for these individuals. Care My Way is part of our Healthcare Engagement and Equity Research program at AIHI led by Professor Reema Harrison. A new Voluntary AI Safety Standard has been published by The Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources. https://lnkd.in/ggXehJNv It includes 10 voluntary guard rails that organisations should adopt to ensure AI use is safe and effective. https://lnkd.in/g_auEEzZ Use cases are provided to explain how the guardrails might be applied. Whilst no healthcare use cases are provided, the guardrails clearly apply and so set a benchmark for healthcare organisations to adopt AI. https://lnkd.in/gX88A7Ka Presumably the Therapeutic Goods and Administration agency (TGA), which has oversight of healthcare safety regulation, will provide more guidance in the near future. Minsiter Husic’s press release foreshadows that mandatory guardrails will follow: ”Today we’re also releasing a new Voluntary AI Safety Standard with immediate effect.  It provides practical guidance for businesses where their use is high risk, so they can start implementing best practice in the use of AI. The Standard give businesses certainty ahead of implementing mandatory guardrails.  In step with similar actions in other jurisdictions – including the EU, Japan, Singapore, the US – the Standard will be updated over time to conform with changes in best practice.”

We have a new article in The Conversation Australia + NZ today based on the latest research from Prof Johanna Westbrook and A/Prof Magda Raban on technology related medical errors in hospitals. "Our research showed that as many as one in three medication errors are technology-related. That is, the design or functionality of the electronic medication system facilitated the error."
