I'm excited to share the news that my hackathon team won the Mega Chess Hackathon: Train AI Chess Bots on GPUs, sponsored by Strong Compute! I teamed up with Suryaprakash Senthil Kumar and Ashish Mukharji. Ten San Francisco and Sydney teams competed simultaneously to build the strongest possible chess-playing deep learning model in just two days. The event culminated in a model vs. model tournament, where the bots faced off to determine the final winner. We explored a range of approaches, including CNNs, transformers, multi-head attention, and a GPT-based model, as described and investigated by Adam Karvonen in his paper “Emergent World Models and Latent Variable Estimation in Chess-Playing Language Models.” Adam's mechanistic interpretability research on Chess-GPT models applied linear probes to analyze Chess-GPT network activations and concluded that the network creates an emergent world model including the chessboard, piece positions, and even latent variables like player ELO rating. Learning about this research was a fascinating side quest. All teams had access to Strong Compute's ISC ("Instant Supercomputer") service, which made it incredibly easy for us to train our models on multi-gigabyte datasets of historical Grandmaster games and Leela Chess Zero self-play, using powerful 72xA100 clusters. A huge thanks to my teammates and everyone who made this event possible, especially Ben Sand, Adam Peaston, Tim Smoothy, and Rebecca Pham from Strong Compute for providing the infrastructure and support that allowed us to compete at this level. Watch this space for an upcoming case study.

I had an incredible experience this weekend at the GPU Chess Hackathon hosted by Strong Compute in San Francisco! ✨ Working alongside Justin F. Knoll and Ashish Mukharji, we leveraged Strong Compute's GPU clusters to train deep learning models for chess, with the Stockfish Chess engine evaluating the board states. It was an amazing opportunity to connect with brilliant minds from both academia and industry. I'm thrilled to announce that our model, MegaChess, came out with flying colors and won the hackathon! 🎉 My sincere thanks go to the Strong Compute team for making this event possible. I also extend my gratitude to Adam Peaston and Ben Sand for their unwavering support throughout the hackathon. This victory was incredibly rewarding and highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving success. I’m excited to apply these insights going forward. #ChessHackathon #AI #MachineLearning #GPUComputing #StrongCompute #DeepLearning

Passionate AI Enthusiast and Aspiring Expert: Exploring the Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence

🚀 Just spent an amazing weekend participating in the GPU Chess Hackathon with my team, Andrew Vo and Brian Tong! 🧠♟️ We had the incredible opportunity to train AI Chess bots on GPUs, diving deep into rapid iteration cluster training using Strong Compute’s Instant Super Computer. This environment made it so much easier and faster to run jobs on shared GPU clusters, allowing us to start training within seconds, even for large datasets and large cluster sizes. Here are some highlights: 1. Access to 48 GPU clusters for 2 days. 2. 9 teams competing to create the ultimate chess AI. 3. Training character-level generative language models using PGNs from Leela Chess Zero. Judging based on a tournament between each team's model. And... drumroll please... congratulations to our team, "UTS," for coming in 2nd place with our championship model! 🥈🎉 A huge thank you to Strong Compute for allowing us to participate, and special thanks to Ben Sand, Adam Peaston, and their whole team for making this event possible! This experience was incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the chance to blend human intuition, champion moves, and innovative techniques to push the boundaries of AI in chess. #ChessHackathon #AI #MachineLearning #GPUComputing #StrongCompute
