Increasing tensions between the current U.S. President’s administration and major news sources have jettisoned sales of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 through the roof. Whether you’re an Orwell fan or not, the novel is certainly relevant in the era of “alternative facts” and “fake news.” In light of its recent popularity, I was inspired to delve into the iconic book covers that have come to represent 1984. Part 1 Ch. I- Winston Smith is a 39 year-old living in Oceania and working for the Ministry of Truth under the Party. The Party controls nearly every aspect of everyone’s lives. Thought Police monitor citizens through telescreens, which are in every room. Winston has one small space in his apartment that telescreen can’t monitor, and Winston writes in his diary here. Unknowingly, Winston writes “Down with Big Brother” in his diary, committing thought crime.
