Martin Luther King, Jr., Baptist minister and social activist who led the U.S. civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his death in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States.

Today we’re celebrating the “Lady General of Civil Rights”, Gloria Richardson! ✨ ⁣ ⁣ Born on May 6, 1922, Gloria grew to be a civil rights activist in Maryland in the 1960’s. She is best known for her leadership of the Cambridge Nonviolent Action Committee. ⁣ ⁣ “We weren’t going to stop until we got our five demands, and if violence occurred, then we would have to accept that.”

It was not a march by Washington but a march on the capital, another proof that real change comes not from the center of power but from everyday citizens, writes Jon Favreau.
