Deep sea gigantism

Lucia Terui, a Brazilian who now lives in Japan, became obsessed with photographing the Nomura's jellyfish after encountering the graceful giants of the sea on one of her first diving trips.

By sinking a dead whale to the bottom of the ocean and studying what comes to visit, scientists are learning more about how deep-sea ecosystems are related.

While we as humans continue to try (and fail) to live in peace and harmony, it is worth remembering that the world around us is a brutal, unforgiving place.

Architeuthis Dux, or Giant Squid can develop to enormous proportions (roughly 12–13 m) (39–43 ft), providing an example of deep-sea gigantism. Tales of giant squid have long been spoken among sailors, and they may have inspired the Norse tale of the Kraken, a tentacled sea monster, capable of sinking any ship.
