This is a Metropolitan Police Box situated somewhere in Hammersith circa 1948. This is a rather battered example despite being constructed of pre cast reinforced concrete although the door was made of Teak. The idea of a Police Box was an American one from the late 19th Century. The Metropolitan Police refurbished the blue box (perhaps not coincidentally) the same year "Doctor Who" returned to TV screens.

A police box, used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century, is a public telephone kiosk or callbox for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police.
