Music is Art spotlights not only musicians, but also dancers, artist, poets and DJs, such as DJ Sliiick seen at a past festival.
The 22nd annual festival, founded by Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac, will now take place across the new Terminal B outdoor pavilion, the neighboring Lakeside Lawn and the Outer Harbor when it returns Sept. 21.
In making the announcement, organizers call Buffalo’s Outer Harbor and Terminal B “a perfectly amazing canvas to showcase our WNY creative community.”
Since Music is Art was first held in 2003 on two stages at the corner of Franklin and Allen streets, the not-for-profit festival has showcased hundreds of performers in music, dance and the broader arts scene. Continued growth has seen the festival move to larger spaces, first to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (now the AKG Art Museum) and Delaware Park for a number of years, then to Buffalo RiverWorks where it was held from 2017 to 2023.

An artist creates a work while the band Adam Insult & the Injuries performs on stage at Music is Art.
In March, it was announced that the festival would return to the AKG Art Museum along with SUNY Buffalo State University which are across the street from each other on Elmwood Avenue. But it has since been determined by MiA organizers and the AKG staff “that too many challenges stand in the way of presenting our annual music festival on the grounds of Buffalo’s AKG and Buffalo State University without compromising the energy and character of the event.”
The free festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 21 with the nearly 17 acres of lakefront grounds utilized to hold 26 stages to showcase music, dance, DJs, performance arts plus more than 50 displaying artists, dozens of live art installations and circus acts. The family friendly event has activities for the kids, plus food trucks, vendors and libations.
The Outer Harbor has free and paid parking options for about 2,000 cars with shuttle services available. Terminal B has a Bike Valet, for secure bike parking and there is a Reddy Bike Share station next to the venue along Fuhrmann Boulevard.
The full lineup and ticket information for the 2024 event will be announced. Musicians, artists and volunteers can find information on how to participate at musicisart.org/festival.
