Through the collaborative creation of cyanotypes, the Blue Flag Initiative offers space for community members to process emotions two years after the May 14, 2022 white supremacist attack at Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo.

On July 12, Maria Rosario Jackson, chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, visited the site of one of the “Blues Memorials” from the Blue Flag Initiative project, on Riley Street across from Tops, where she learned about the project from founders Brendan Bannon and Brandon Watson.

Other installation sites of the cyanotype flags include the Johnnie B. Wiley Sports Pavilion, Saint Mary's School for the Deaf, the Richardson Hotel complex, Burchfield Penney Art Center and CEPA Gallery.
