April 8, 1940 – June 2, 2024Lynn A. Malek, a retired Buffalo teacher and prominent as a supporter of the arts, died June 2 in Wellington, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was 84.
Born in New York City, Lynn Rosett Arons was the older of two children and the daughter of Lester and Maxine Rosett Arons and was a 1958 graduate of New Rochelle High School. Her father owned a factory in New York City that made uniforms.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State Teacher’s College and taught home economics in Buffalo elementary and middle schools for more than 30 years.
She was married in 1961 to George G. Malek, whom she met in Cole’s Restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, and joined him in volunteer work and fundraising after he retired in the mid-1980s.
Active for many years with the Women of Studio Arena Theatre, she hosted dinners for the theater’s cast members in her Williamsville home and chaired opening night dinners in the Stage Left Lounge.
Mrs. Malek and her husband also co-chaired fundraising events for the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts, Heritage Centers and AIDS Community Services, which honored them for their work in bringing the Moscow Ballet to Kleinhans Music Hall in 2000.
In addition, she was active in the Morningside Homeowners Association and Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo.
She and her husband moved to Florida in 2001 and returned annually for Curtain Up! festivities. In Florida, she was a member of the board of directors of the Palm Beach Round Table and a supporter of the Armory Art Center and the Florida Stage in Palm Beach.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Malek; and her brother, John Arons. Her husband, who had been general manager of D&E Motors in Williamsville, died in 2017.
A celebration of her life will be held in the fall in Florida.
