It’s not surprising then, that most caregivers say they would benefit from free counselling and mental health supports. bit.ly/3QpIhC4 -------- Le saviez-vous?

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Janet Fast. Dr. Fast was a trailblazer in examining the Canadian care economy. She made advancing knowledge of the impacts of caregiving – in both paid and unpaid contexts – across Canada her life’s work. We owe much of what we know about caring in Canada to her rigorous inquiry. As a leading researcher on care, she was one of CCCE’s first champions in the sector, supporting our work through various councils, serving as an expert reader for first whitepaper, Giving Care, and a vital contributor to our Canadian Caregiving Summit Planning Committee. She was a passionate advocate and her words will continue to be a clarion call: “It’s time for a National Caregiving Strategy and a Canada that recognizes, respects and supports the integral role of family caregivers in society”. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues at the University of Alberta and around the world. She will be missed by many, including all of us at the CCCE. https://lnkd.in/gkdf3QFa
As a Human Ecology GSA student of Dr. Janet Fast and President of the Alberta Association On Gerontology, it is with deep sadness that I have to say Janet passed away. I have always said the the University of Alberta Department of Human Ecology is a hidden gem of teaching and mentoring excellence at the University of Alberta. Janet was one of those exemplary teachers and mentors. Janet touched the lives of many with her kindness, strength, and just down-to-earth practicality. We all stand on her shoulders. Dr. Janet Fast was widely recognized for her pioneering work in the field of caregiving, particularly for her focus on the economic and social impacts of caregiving on individuals, families, and society. Her research has been instrumental in highlighting the often invisible contributions of family caregivers, emphasizing the need for greater recognition and support within healthcare systems and policy frameworks. Janet delved into the costs—both financial and emotional—borne by caregivers, while also advocating for policies that support caregiver well-being and work-life balance. She contributed significantly to advancing our understanding of the critical role caregivers play in the care ecosystem, as well as the importance of caregiver-centered policies and interventions. Through her dedication, Dr. Fast not only raised awareness about the challenges caregivers face but also provided evidence-based recommendations to inform public policy and promote a more inclusive and supportive environment for family caregivers across Canada and beyond. Thank you Janet!
