Prepare for severe weather:        

  • Complete essential errands before severe weather hits.  
  • Fill up your car with gas.  
  • Assemble an emergency kit and review your emergency plan with your family.  
  • Move all valuables and important papers to an upper level of the house in case of flooding.  
  • Clear rain gutters and downspouts of debris.
  • Locate and check your flashlights and your battery-powered radio. Keep them handy.  
  • Sign up for Fairfax County Emergency Alerts.  
  • Follow the Fairfax County Emergency Blog.
  • Report any downed trees.  
  • During a storm, if you have lost power, always report your outage to your service provider.  
  • Stay away from any downed power lines. Always assume the lines are energized and make sure to report them to your service provider.  
  • Avoid driving your car through water, there is no way to tell how deep it is. The water could sweep way your car. Remember the phrase: Turn Around Don't Drown.
