ever I shall return. Between the twodays, what a large and noble life had been lived. The city had made elaborate preparations forthe final services. The funeral in Springfield wason May 4th. The order of service included adirge, a prayer, the reading of his second in-augural address, and an oration. The latter wasby Bishop Simpson and was worthy of the nobleand eloquent orator. It was a beautiful day, therain which had been falling during the long jour-ney was over, and May sunshine filled earth andsky. Near the close of the day the body of thePresident, together with that of his little sonWillie, which also had been brought from Wash-ington, was laid in a vault in Oak Eidge ceme-tery. A movement was at once set on foot to erect asuitable monument. For this purpose a few large 410 LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. sums of money were subscribed, but most of itcame in small sums from the plain people. Thenegro troops contributed $8,000. The sum of$180,000 in all was raised and a noble structure

Tomb of Abraham Lincoln at Springfield, Illinois. was erected. It was dedicated in 1874. Theorator of the day was his old-time friend, Gov-ernor, afterwards General, Oglesby. Warm wordsof appreciation were added by Generals Grant andSherman. The former, who served under him asgeneral and for two terms succeeded him inoffice, among other things said, To know himpersonally was to love and respect him for hisgreat qualities of heart and head, and for hispatience and patriotism. A NATIONS SORROW. 4H Lincoln was never a resident of Chicago, buthe was always a favorite in that city, even thoughit was the home of his great rival, Judge Doug-las. It was there he was nominated in 1860, andthe city always felt as if it had a personal claimon him. It has done itself honor by the construc-tion of Lincoln Park.
