Real-photo postcard of the back of the Camden Public Library building in Camden, Maine. The photo was taken from the adjacent Amphitheatre, and shows the back of the library with its dual staircase. The Faun's Garden with statue can be seen, as well as the stone steps leading down to the Amphitheatre. In 1916, Mary Louise Curtis Bok donated the property to the town of Camden to be used for a library. 1922 Parker Morse Hooper offered plans for the building. Charles G. Loring, a Boston architect, assisted. The cornerstone was laid August 17, 1927 and the building was completed the next year. Mary Louise Curtis Bok, also donated the land for the Amphitheatre in 1931. Fletcher Steele of Boston was employed as landscape architect for the project. |
