Abhay Vakil did his graduation in Science from the University of Mumbai and went to the US for higher studies. He completed BS from Syracuse University based out of New York
His father Arvind Vakil and three other members co-founded Asian Paints in 1942 which went on to become India's largest paint company. After returning from the US, he joined the company
In his early life, Vakil was a Wholetime Director and handled the decorative segment of the company as part of his role he procurement of raw materials, metal containers and other packaging goods as well as branding and pricing strategies
Additionally, he handled the quality department, ensured the achievement of sales targets and helped in the containment of costs for India's leading paints company. He joined the Asian Paints board in 1983
With his rich experience in decorative business and general management of the company, Vakil was appointed as Managing Director of Asian Paints in 1998 and remained in the post till March 31, 2009
From April 1, 2009, he held the position of Non-Executive Director of Asian Paints and in July 2014, the board appointed him as an additional/ non-executive director of the company. He also served as the MD of Hitech Plast
Vakil has worked with Asian Paints for over forty years and most of his wealth can be attributed to the minority stake he holds in the company
Along with Ashwin Choksi and Ashwin Dani, he played a critical role in transforming the paints giant into a world-class company, under their leadership the firm grew by leaps and bounds and majorly remained debt-free
