    • He was brought into the Indian side midway between the inaugural season of the World T20 championship in 2007. Sharma played some impressive knocks and the Indian side, led by MS Dhoni, lifted the title that year
    • In 2008, he was picked by the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Deccan Chargers
    • Sharma took a hat-trick in a crucial match against Mumbai Indians in the second season of the IPL in 2009. His performance was impressive throughout the tournament and Deccan Chargers went on to win the IPL that year
    • Sharma got his first ODI century in a match against Zimbabwe on May 28, 2010
    • Though he was getting runs, albeit sporadically, he failed to gain the trust of the selectors due to his inconsistency and was eventually dropped from the 2011 World Cup squad
    • In 2011, he was transferred to the IPL team Mumbai Indians and was promoted as the team’s captain in 2013
    • Sharma made his Test debut in November 2013 and scored a century in his first match. It was the same series where Sachin Tendulkar bid farewell to international cricket

    • Playing against Australia on November 2, 2013, he scored 209 runs to record his first ODI double century
    • His second ODI double ton came in a match against Sri Lanka on November 13, 2014. The unforgettable knock of 264 in 173 balls still holds the record for the highest individual score in an ODI
    • Sharma was picked up for the 2015 World Cup and became India’s second-highest scorer in the tournament
    • He won the Arjuna Award in 2015 for his contributions to the game of cricket
    • Owing to his impressive performance, he was made the skipper of the Indian ODI side for the first time in 2017. He continued to lead the team intermittently when Virat Kholi isn’t available
    • Sharma scored five centuries during the 2019 World Cup tournament, which is a record of its kind
    • Thus far, Sharma has won five IPL titles as the captain of the Mumbai Indians team and is one of the highest run-scorers in the history of the tournament
    • Known for his effortless stroke-playing capabilities, he holds the record for being the only batsman to have scored three ODI double centuries. Sharma is also one of the few players to have scored a century in all three forms of international cricket
    • Sharma was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2020
