Freeman reporters were recognized by the New York State Associated Press Association in 2005 for coverage of a shooting at the [[Hudson Valley Mall]]<ref>http://www.elon.edu/academics/communications/connections/2005/aug_05/earley.asp</ref> Feb. 13 of that year and for a series of articles on severe flooding that occurred the following month. Other prominent news events covered by the newspaper include the [[Woodstock '94]] music festival and the marijuana arrests (in 2004 and 2005) of singer [[Art Garfunkel]].
 
The Freeman is a unionized newspaper. Employees are represented by The [[Kingston Newspaper Guild]]. The paper is owned by the [[Journal Register Company]] of Yardley, Pa.
