KMSB-TV is the FOX-affiliated television station serving Tucson, Arizona. The station broadcasts in analog on VHF channel 11 and in digital on UHF channel 25 (11.1). Since the hilly terrain of Tucson hinders broadcast reception in parts of the city, KMSB has a translator on channel 50 atop Mount Bigelow to serve east Tucson. Also, since it is located in Green Valley, Arizona, the signal is slightly hard to pick up in the northern part of Tucson and Marana.

History

KMSB signed on the air in 1967 as KZAZ. It was Tucson's first independent station, but was licensed to Nogales. In 1984, the station was sold to Mountain States Broadcasting, a division of the Providence Journal Company, and the call letters were changed to KMSB the following year. They have been a FOX affiliate since the network first signed on in October 9, 1986. Plus, it is now the longest existing Fox affiliate in Arizona, after KNXV-TV dropped Fox for ABC.

In the early 1990s, KMSB took control of KTTU-TV Channel 18, which was owned by Clear Channel Communications, and was finally allowed to move Channel 11's city of license to Tucson. Belo Corporation became the owner of KMSB after the company purchased Providence Journal's holdings in 1997.

The station (in its KZAZ days) had a news department. However, to cut costs, Providence Journal axed news broadcasts once they took over. It wasn't until 2004 when they started airing a 9 p.m. newscast once again, produced by sister station KTVK in Phoenix with local reports from NBC affiliate KVOA. They were one of the last top-100 market FOX affiliates to air late-evening news. KMSB retired from cartoons at the same time; 4Kids TV now airs on KTTU. KMSB also broadcasts KTVK's Good Morning Arizona and Good Day Arizona from Phoenix.
