Early life
Sri was born in Padang Panjang in March 1935 as the eldest of six children, all of whom were girls, to parents who worked as teachers. After about two years living at her maternal grandmother's house, Sri and her family moved to Jakarta, before settling in Magelang, Central Java in 1949.[2] Sri continued her education in Yogyakarta and continued her studies at English Literature at Gajah Mada University, UGM. After graduating, he taught and became head of the library at his alma mater. In Yogyakarta he met Roger Owen, a British graduate from Oxford University who taught history for three years.
After Roger's teaching period ended, the couple decided to move to England. In these early days of living in England, Sri rediscovered her passion for cooking.
