1923 is an American Western drama television series that premiered on December 18, 2022, on Paramount+.[1] The series is a prequel to the Paramount Network series Yellowstone and serves as a sequel to the series 1883. The series is set to run for two seasons with 8 episodes each.

Premise

Follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923, during a time of various hardships including Western Expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, which in Montana started a decade earlier.

Cast

Main

  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, the wife to Jacob Dutton and family matriarch.[2] Having no children of their own, Jacob and Cara raise James' as their own.[3]
  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, the patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch, husband to Cara Dutton, and brother of James Dutton (portrayed by Tim McGraw in 1883).
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Jacob Dutton's nephew, and John Dutton Sr.’s brother, who has witnessed the horrors of World War I and travels Africa tracking big game. [4]
  • Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, a British woman who meets one of the Duttons abroad.
  • Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, a sheep farmer and adversary of the Duttons.[5]
  • Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, John Dutton Sr.’s son and great-nephew to Jacob Dutton. He is a dedicated rancher who is deeply loyal to his family. He is John Dutton III's uncle.
  • Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, a fiercely loyal ranch foreman.
  • Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, a young woman at a government residential boarding school.
  • Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth "Liz" Strafford, a feisty and capable young woman set to marry Jack Dutton.

Cara Dutton in hunting down a perpetrator running away with an unloaded, fully discharged six-gun in his hand and when she catches up she then double barrels him at point blank range when he trips and falls on the ground. One of the Dutton's decides he must go big game hunting in Africa and when he spots a lion in the brush, he then starts his approach with his big-game rifle locked and loaded. When the lion decides to rush him from the thicket, Dutton waits until the lion pounces into the air at him before discharging his rifle at point blank range, killing the lion instantly. Back at the ranch, Jacob Dutton and his cowboys look over their ranch with all four on horseback as they decide on their next actions.

Crossovers

The show is narrated by the 1883 character Elsa, voiced by Isabel May from the 1883 TV series.[12] Elsa was daughter to James and Margaret Dutton.

The only character that appears in both prequel shows is John Dutton Sr.

Production

It was announced in February 2022 that a second Yellowstone prequel series had been ordered titled 1932 that would succeed the series 1883.[13] In May, Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford were cast to star in the series.[14] In June, the title was renamed to 1923.[15] In September, Sebastian Roché, James Badge Dale, Darren Mann, Marley Shelton, Michelle Randolph, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Julia Schlaepfer were added to the cast.[16][2]

Pre-production began in Butte, Montana in July 2022,[17] with filming officially beginning on August 22.[18]

The series is set to run for two seasons with 8 episodes each.[19]
