Adrian Martens, known professionally as Dasychira (/dɑːsɪkrɑː/ DAHSEEKIHRA) is a South African-born musician and record producer based in New York. Dasychira gained recognition for releasing EPs Immolated (2017)[1], Haptics (2018)[2], and their debut album xDream (2019) on Blueberry Records.

Career

Martens studied music at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University.[3]

In January 2017, they released the single "Vipera" featuring New York performer Embaci and announced their first release on Blueberry Records called Immolated. Tiny Mix Tapes gave the album 4/5 and said:

Relentlessly, productions veer into massified attempts at cinematically swallowing whole experiences of apocalypse, dysmorphia, and alienation into highly coded extensions of personal will. Dasychira’s music skirts through this milieu with a truly thoughtful impermanence[4]

Dasychira embarked on a 2017 Summer tour of Northern America, ending the trip in New York with an event that brought together QUALIATIK, sentinel and Kodi Fabricant to co-found the label and art-collective unseelie.

The following year, Dasychira released the EP Haptics on Blueberry Records, with collaborations with Haleek Maul, Malibu, and Embaci.[5] They toured Europe.

Debut album xDream was released on Blueberry Records October 31, 2019, and was accompanied by live performances in Asia with Yikii.

In early 2020, Dasychira briefly lived in LA before moving to Amsterdam, Netherlands. They performed at several festivals in Europe including Creepy Teepee in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic. They released Hollywood Forever on unseelie in May 2021.

In 2022 they returned to New York. "Banyan Tree" was released on February 10th, 2023 on unseelie, the first single from their upcoming album See Something on unseelie.[6]

In addition to their solo work, they have production credits for Saul Williams, Haleek Maul, Embaci, Yikii and Daniela Lalita.[7]

The Fader has described their music as "sounds that emphasize all the gnarled abstractions in our constantly amorphous world."[8]

Personal life

Dasychira was born Adrian Martens in Johannesburg, South Africa and currently resides in Lower Manhattan. They identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns.[citation needed]
