2008-2009 Renovation
The station is scheduled to undergo a major renovation beginning in early 2009. It is expected to be completed by late 2009.[4]. The village sent out a Request For Qualifications on June 17th to seek bids for the project. Currently more then 30 firms have expressed interest in the project. The deadline to submit an initial proposal is July 18th. After the deadline has passed, the village will select approximately 6. The remaining candidates will then present their proposals to the village board. A final decision is expected to be made by mid-August of 2008.
While the village does not currently have a specific design for the station, there are several elements that have been agreed on. The new design must incorporate a spacious appearance, a larger amount of landscaping and trees, and be energy conscious. The Tinley Park Village Trustee has said "As you approach the station it should have an elegance of its own."[5]
The renovation is currently budgeted at approximately $7.5 million. The funding is being supplied by Metra and federal grants. Metra has budgeted approximately $5 million towards the renovation. A federal grant of $669,000 is also being applied to the project. $2.2 million has been allocated to raise the platforms by nine inches to make them level with the train floors. The new station is budgeted at $2 million. An additional $1.2 million has been allocated to build four warming shelters. The station will also be made compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act during the reconstruction. Bus service and bus-related facilities will also be available at the new station[6] Currently, no bus connections are available at this station. The current station will be open during the reconstruction.[7]
