James Lynnwood Bentley (June 15, 1927, Upson County, Georgia — November 7, 2003) was a former Comptroller General of Georgia. He served in that capacity from 1963-71. Originally a Democrat, Bentley switched to the Republican Party in 1968 and unsuccessfully sought the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1970. He was defeated by more liberal candidate, Hal Suit, an Atlanta news broadcaster, who in turn lost the general election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
