Darkness in a Different Light is the eleventh studio album by progressive metal band Fates Warning, released on September 30, 2013 (Europe) and October 1 (North America) through Inside Out Music.[1] It is the band's first album since FWX (2004), marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career, as well as being their first studio album with guitarist Frank Aresti since Inside Out (1994); coincidentally, it is the band's first release through Inside Out Music.[6] Drummer Bobby Jarzombek also makes his debut on a Fates Warning album.

Background

Plans for an eleventh Fates Warning studio album were mentioned in September 2009, when vocalist Ray Alder told The Art of Prog that the band's focus was working on new material and realized that they had not released an album in years.[7] In June 2011, guitarist and bandleader Jim Matheos hinted that Fates Warning would not be playing any more shows that year and continue working on their new album for a 2012 release.[8]

Asked in March 2012 by Bulgarian radio station Tangra Mega Rock about the songwriting process of Darkness in a Different Light, Alder replied, "We're trying as hard as we can. We have these shows [in Europe] and then we go to Brazil in April. And in the meantime we are working as hard as we can to finish the album." In the same interview, Alder hoped that the album would be released in either the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013.[9] On December 28, 2012, Matheos confirmed that the songwriting process was completed.[10] Three months later, it was announced that Fates Warning would enter the studio in April to begin recording the album.[11]

On August 1, 2013, the album title and release dates were announced. Alder on the album:[6]

Darkness in a Different Light is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band. I believe that this lineup is the best that Fates Warning has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album. It's been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished here. We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years. We plan on touring as much as possible for Darkness in a Different Light and hopefully we'll hit a few places we've never been.

The track "O Chloroform" features lyrics by keyboardist Kevin Moore, which were originally left unused from the writing sessions for the 2011 Arch/Matheos album Sympathetic Resonance. Alder remarked of the song's lyrics and curious title: "It's such a cool song, ... I know what chloroform is, but I don't know what he's talking about [laughs]."[12]
