The Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (SKP) was established in March 1978 as a break-away group from the then active Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists. The founders included Larry Alcala, Hugo Yonzon Jr., Edd Aragon, Pol Galvez, Gene Cabrera, Edgar Soller, Boy Togonon, and Menny Martin. As contained in its by-laws, the members came mostly from the newspaper, magazine, and comics publications.

In its 34 years of its existence, the group has been led by Larry Alcala, Nonoy Marcelo, Boy Togonon, Boboy Yonzon, Roni Santiago, Tito Milambiling, Neil Doloricon, and Tonton Young, with Yonzon serving the most number of years. SKP is a collegial body that aims to improve the craft and careers of its members by providing wider exposure and opportunities for work. It has mounted various exhibits, participated in caricature sessions, sent members to cartoon forums in Japan, published books under the auspices of donors, and referred members to contractual projects.

The groups recent significant projects included a group exhibit on Jose Rizal in the National Library in June 2011 and a group exhibit on Benigno "Ninloy" Aquino at the SM Megamall in August 2011. It has also come out with two books: the SKP Roster Book that serves as a portfolio and directory of its members, and the Color Folo showing the works of the members in full color. At present, it is preparing the New Roster Book to include new members that came in in the past two or three years.

The SKP is a member of the National Press Club, and is one of the proponents the Philippine International Cartoon, Comics and Animation Festival, an event dedicated to comics artists, animators, and game developers. It is also a regular participant in the Komikon.
