In the original Japanese context, an otaku is someone who has an obsessive interest in something, commonly anime or manga. The term is mostly equivalent to "geek" or "nerd", but in a more derogatory manner than used in the West. The word entered English as a loanword from the Japanese language. It is typically used to refer to a fan of anime or manga but can also refer to Japanese video games or Japanese culture in general.
