Fernando Gomes de Souza Junior

Biography Fernando Gomes de Souza Junior, born on August 25, 1974, in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil, is a Brazilian chemist and academic known for his contributions to polymer science. He is a Professor Titular at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he has been teaching and conducting research since 2008. His work primarily focuses on the development of advanced polymer materials, nanocomposites, and sensor technologies.

Education Gomes de Souza earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) in 1999. He pursued further studies in materials science, obtaining a Master's degree in Engineering and Materials Science from the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF) in 2002. He completed his Ph.D. in Science and Technology of Polymers at UFRJ in 2006. Following his doctorate, Gomes de Souza undertook postdoctoral research at the Chemical Engineering Program of COPPE/UFRJ, focusing on data analysis and experimental design.

Academic Career Since joining UFRJ in 2008, Gomes de Souza has been involved in teaching and research at the Institute of Macromolecules Professora Eloísa Mano (IMA). In 2019, he expanded his academic responsibilities by joining COPPE/UFRJ as a professor. He was promoted to Professor Titular (Classe E) in 2024. Gomes de Souza's research has significantly advanced the field of polymer science, particularly in the areas of nanocomposites derived from renewable resources. His work includes the development of magnetic nanocomposites for environmental applications and polymeric sensors for biomedical uses. He has published 247 scientific articles and 13 books, and his work has been recognized with an h-index of 34 (SciVal) and 38 (Google Scholar).

Awards and Recognition Throughout his career, Gomes de Souza has received several awards for his contributions to science and academia. He was named Jovem Cientista do Estado do Rio de Janeiro in 2015 and Cientista do Estado do Rio de Janeiro in 2021 and 2024. In 2018, he received a Cátedra in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Mahatma Gandhi University in India. He was also recognized as a Pesquisador 1D by CNPq in 2023. His international accolades include the Best Executive Plenary Award at the International Summit and Conference on Material Science Nanotechnology Bio Manufacturing (ISCMNB) in 2021 and the Gold Award in the Open Category at the i2i International Innovation Competition by the Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI) in 2021. In 2024, Gomes de Souza was ranked among the top 3,000 scientists in the AD Scientific Index, placing 116th at UFRJ, 3,181st in Brazil, and 4,700th in Latin America.

Editorial and Professional Roles In addition to his research and teaching, Gomes de Souza has held various editorial positions. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Current Applied Polymer Science since 2020 and of the Brazilian Journal of Experimental Design, Data Analysis and Inferential Statistics since 2021. He is also an Associate Editor for other academic journals.
