Black Alice, also known as Lori Zechlin, was introduced ad a one time character for Birds of Prey, issue #76. A cute troubled goth girl, is told in Birtd of Prey #76 lived with her father and mother, a drug addicted woman. Both Lori and her father never suspected Mrs. Zechlin was an addicted, because, as Lori herself said, she drugged herself with farmaceutical products. Until one day, overwhelmed by shame, Lori's mother took a strong dose of her drugs, put her best dress on and drowned herself in the pool... where Lori, coming back home, saw her corpse.

Lori's father was shattered, and slipped in a depressive state, and secluded himself at home, even stopping to go at work, but trying to be strong in Lori's eyes. Lori noticed the situation, and started to took care of his father, even if she herself was shattered. Her grades started to slip down, and the only thought she had in mind was of revenge against drug dealers.

The same night she discovered that, somehow (she didn't know how) she could "borrow" about an half of the power of every magic being in the DC Universe (but she at now seems to cannot control when and for how time she could control her borrowed power... at every moment she could manifest a form of magic, and at every time she could lose that power), and taking for herself the name of Black Alice, using her newfound power to punish pushers and drug dealers, avenging her mother.

When Oracle sent Black Canary, disguised as a school teacher, to keep an eye over Lori, Lori was experiencing other minor troubles, that contributed to enrage her angry soul... Dawn, her friend and chief of the Wiccan circle who attended, expelled her, blaming her for "bringing black energies" into the group since her mother's dead (the truth was that Dawn was only jealous of the real magic power possessed by Lori). Forced to leave her boyfriend, Kyle, due to an emerging of Doctor Fate's power that she decided to use before its disappeareance, and after a brief battling with Black Canary (using now Zatanna's backwards magic), discovered that Kyle was doublecrossing her, having a relation with Dawn. Furter enraged by the harsh reaction of Kyle, Lori, now the power of Shazam, spoke the magic word to become a sort of Black Mary Marvel, and beat her boyfriend. After the intervention of Black Canary and the apologies of Dawn Lori calmed herself.

More recently, during Day of Vengeance miniseries, while the rest of Shadowpact was battling the Spectre, Detective Chimp took Nightshade at the home of "the most powerful teenager in the universe"... Lori's house, where his father, after some arguing with Detective Chimp and Nightshade, and a little talk about her powers with Lori, supposedly give her the permission to join the Shadowpact... because after the small "daughter-father talk", the two magic being took Lori on the battleground, now empty for the escape of the Spectre
