Da Drought 3 is a two-disc mixtape by Lil Wayne. This is the third mixtape in the trilogy of mixtapes in Da Drought series. The mixtape was delayed slightly as a result of Wayne's last-minute decision to add songs to the album's second disc. The album is available as a free legal download.

Although some major websites, such as mixtrap.com, have been selling the CD as an official product, Wayne has specifically addressed the fact (even on the Outro on both discs) that he intended for the entire CD to be free of charge, in manner of a gift to his fan base. It was nominated for mixtape of the year at the Ozone Awards but lost to Killer Mike's I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind.

Reception

Recently, Da Drought 3 was hailed as the best mixtape of 2007 by MTV news. Wayne was officially named The "Hottest MC" by their hip hop brain trust.

This album was #27 on Rolling Stone's list of the Top 50 Albums of 2007.[1]

Disputes

On this mixtape, Lil Wayne addresses many issues he had been questioned on leading up to the release, such as the Birdman and Lil Wayne "kiss" and Gillie Da Kid's claim that he had written songs for Wayne. He makes direct and indirect references to both in multiple songs.

Birdman

Lil Wayne doesn't waste time addressing the rumors surrounding Birdman and himself, plainly saying "Damn right, I kissed my daddy. I think they pissed at how rich my daddy is. I'm his kid, I stunt with my daddy." He has said in interviews that the kiss was actually a cheek kiss, like the way the Mafia does. He continues in "We Takin' Over" to declare, "So diss me and don't diss my Daddy, 'cuz who was there when no one wasn't? Just my daddy. Who was there when I needed money? Just my daddy. So who be there when I see the money? Just my daddy, Who said I'd be the one? Just my daddy, Hello hip-hop I'm home, it's your daddy."

Gillie Da Kid

Wayne refers to Gillie metaphorically several times. In "Hard Body," he says "shirt softer than Gillie. "fuck gillie da kid" He makes another jab in "I'm Blooded", where he uses imagery by rapping "I advance my flow, and they must like that. They like it so much, they say they write that. Barking at the dog, but I don't bite back. I ain't CPR, I ain't bringing their life back." Lil Wayne claims that as he has grown in fame n hustle "they" are trying to ride his coattails, but he is not going to fuel the fire of controversy. Wayne is saying that the opposition (including Gillie) is simply trying to get into the spotlight by making claims and insulting him, but if he doesn't respond to it ("bite back"), it won't help them ("CPR"), and the opposition therefore has no fuel to continue.[citation needed]

Wayne also refers to Gillie on "Live from 504." While using nautical terms Wayne says "I'm a shark in the water. Yep, I swim with the bigs. So I don't have time to deal with Willie the Squid." He warns that "lilly pad" rappers should "look at the monster (Wayne)" because they don't want to crash "like la-la-la bamba." Wayne uses the wreckless death of Richie Valens to warn Gillie and other "new rappers" not to disturb him.
