The Cyrillic letter Straight U with stroke or Waw with Damma (in Kazakh) (Ұ, ұ) is a straight Cyrillic У with a horizontal line through it. It is used in Kazakh to represent the close back rounded vowel /u/ or the Near-close near-back rounded vowel /ʊ/. This letter should not be confused with the symbol for the Yen, the Japanese currency (¥).

Transliteration

In Kazakh, this letter may be transliterated as u or uw.
