Tasaka Guri-Guri is a small, family-owned shop located in Kahului, the heart of Maui, Hawaii. They specialize in a very special treat that is popular among the residents of Hawaii, known as guri-guri. Guri-guri is a frozen dessert which is a cross between that of sherbet and ice cream. It is typically made with the mixture of guava juice, any type of lime soda and condensed milk. Tasaka Guri-Guri is very protective of their recipe and has managed to keep it a family secret for decades.

Origin

Founding

Jokichi Tasaka first made guri-guri in the early 1900s while he was living in Japan.[1][2] Jokichi called the dessert goodie-goodie, as in something "good" to eat.[3] His son, Gunji Tasaka came to realize that it was difficult for the older Japanese people to pronounce the name, so he began to call it guri-guri.[4] Gunji Tasaka later migrated to the United States and continued to run the family business.[5][verification needed]

Tasaka Guri-Guri has been around for over 100 years but has relocated their store throughout the islands of Hawaii.[5][verification needed] The Tasaka family's business first started with a small store on Pu'unene Avenue located in Kahului, Maui.[1] From that small store, the Tasaka family relocated to a nearby city, Wailuku, where they stayed for about 1 year.[1] Jokichi Tasaka and his family then moved to The Old Kahului Shopping Center in Kahului where they continued to sell guri-guri for many years.[1] As of now, they are currently located in the Maui Mall in Kahului where they have been since 1973.[1]

Owner and family relation

The shop is considered a family business. Jokichi's great-granddaughter Gail Tasaka; Gail's sister Cindy Tasaka; Gail and Cindy's cousin Kelly Kohatsu; and Kelly's father Tony Ishikawa, are now the only people currently employed at the store.[5][verification needed]
