Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems / Computer Science (ICICS/CS) building at UBC

The UBC Computer Science department (UBC CS) at the University of British Columbia was established in May 1968, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018. UBC CS is located in Point Grey, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The department experienced a significant period of growth in the 21st century.[citation needed] It now has 57 faculty, 48 staff, 208 graduate students, and 2,115 undergraduate majors and 19 minors across all specializations.

The department has a significant number of research and educational collaborations with various units at UBC (adjunct professors, affiliate members, and associate members). There are two faculty members who are jointly appointed with the UBC Departments of Pathology and Psychology, and a faculty member who has a courtesy appointment in Mathematics. Faculty members have also created strong connections with several other departments on campus, for example the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the Faculty of Applied Science, and the Departments of Statistics and Mathematics within the Faculty of Science. The department also partners with the Department of Statistics (within the Faculty of Science) in co-leading the Master of Data Science program, which is a ten-month professional degree.

The department has many combined majors programs at the undergraduate degree level, providing an opportunity to further collaborate with other units on campus, including with the Faculty of Arts, Vantage College, and other departments inside and outside the Faculty of Science.

The department's Committee for Outreach, Diversity, and Equity (commonly referred to using the acronym “CODE”) adopts a broad interpretation of diversity and supports students from under-represented groups in leading their own events.

He registered the domain in 1987. John Demco registered ubc.ca the following year, in 1988. John has been recognized for his innovation and work by the Canadian government, the U of A, and industry. In 2014, he was presented the UBC Honorary Alumni Award, was inducted into Canada’s Internet Hall of Fame, received a Lifetime Achievement Canadian New Media Award in 2006, and a Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013.
