This is a Wikipedia user talk page. This is not an encyclopedia article, or even the talk page for an encyclopedia article. It is a miserable little pile of secrets. Do not consult it for term papers, doctoral dissertations, Congressional committee reports, ecumenical statements, et cetera. |
This user talk page might be watched by friendly talk page stalkers, which means that someone other than me might reply to your query. Their input is welcome and their help with messages that I cannot reply to quickly is appreciated. |

Hi there. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them has been enabled for the following 10 wikis: mediawiki.org, the Italian, Catalan, Hebrew and Vietnamese Wikipedias, French Wikisource, and English Wikivoygage, Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikinews. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist on those wikis you can let the developers know.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 October. It will be on all wikis from 7 October (calendar).
- Some gadgets and bots that use the API to read the AbuseFilter log might break. The
hidden
property will no longer say an entry isimplicit
for unsuppressed log entries about suppressed edits. If your bot needs to know this, do a separate revision query. Additionally, the property will have the valuefalse
for visible entries; previously, it wasn't included in the response. [1] - A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them will be enabled for all production wikis. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist you can let the developers know.
Future changes
- You can soon get cross-wiki notifications in the iOS Wikipedia app. You can also get notifications as push notifications. More notification updates will follow in later versions. [2]
- The JavaScript variables
wgExtraSignatureNamespaces
,wgLegalTitleChars
, andwgIllegalFileChars
will soon be removed frommw.config
. These are not part of the "stable" variables available for use in wiki JavaScript. [3] - The JavaScript variables
wgCookiePrefix
,wgCookieDomain
,wgCookiePath
, andwgCookieExpiration
will soon be removed from mw.config. Scripts should instead usemw.cookie
from the "mediawiki.cookie" module. [4]

Correct
You are correct. At this time I am busy working on other articles, and I am doing my best to stay out of that very personal and contentious AfD. I have done all I can there and at this point it is just repetitive. You are right though that I certainly did not comport myself well with that post. Lightburst (talk) 23:00, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Huggle revert?
User:JPxG, before reverting me, can you see the discussion at Talk:Breast_tax#Redirect? An IP is disrupting the page by removing the redirect when the consensus is towards the redirect and his only reason is "Upper caste people want to hide this totally".[5] I am basically reverting the vandalism here. Can you self-revert your restoration of the redirect? 27.57.177.155 (talk) 03:59, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- I see you are editing both manually and with automated tool after I made this message above. Can you reply? 27.57.177.155 (talk) 04:16, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hold on, let me take a look. jp×g 04:19, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, this looks to me like a complicated enough issue that it should be resolved by an AfD rather than local talk page consensus... there was an AfD last year and a DRV that concluded "keep" (not "redirect"). I think your best bet here would be to renominate for deletion, if you feel that strongly about it. jp×g 04:27, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Question
I would rather answer your question here, than create more work for the closer of the RfC. I think this RfC would have been as just avoidable as the first one, had Shibbolethink agreed to stick to the sources. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and JoelleJay is arguing that this group's claims aren't WP:DUE, while PaleoNeonate argues that the page should not have passed WP:AFD. I actually don't have a problem calling them activists, so long as it's not the only descriptor, and I also don't mind citing WP:MEDRS for BALANCE, where possible. However, due to the censorship in China, balance won't actually be possible, and this is a key point that editors will have to grapple with for a long time to come. 217.35.76.147 (talk) 22:02, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Image deletion
My deletion of images at Chevrolet C/K was not unexplained, it was to remove pictures of modified vehicles which do not in any way help the article. Thanks, Mr.choppers | ✎ 02:06, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 October. It will be on all wikis from 14 October (calendar).
- The "auto-number headings" preference is being removed. You can read phab:T284921 for the reasons and discussion. This change was previously announced. A JavaScript snippet is available which can be used to create a Gadget on wikis that still want to support auto-numbering.

Recent changes
- Toolhub is a catalogue to make it easier to find software tools that can be used for working on the Wikimedia projects. You can read more.

Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia Android app are working on communication in the app. You can now answer questions in survey to help the development.
- 3–5% of editors may be blocked in the next few months. This is because of a new service in Safari, which is similar to a proxy or a VPN. It is called iCloud Private Relay. There is a discussion about this on Meta. The goal is to learn what iCloud Private Relay could mean for the communities.
- Wikimedia Enterprise is a new API for those who use a lot of information from the Wikimedia projects on other sites. It is a way to get big commercial users to pay for the data. There will soon be a copy of the Wikimedia Enterprise dataset. You can read more. You can also ask the team questions on Zoom on 22 October 15:00 UTC.

Additional edit requests for Quad (company)
Hi JPxG. On the chance that you may have missed my last ping and post from a few weeks ago, I'm turning to you once again to ask you to look at another set of edit requests on Talk:Quad (company) since you did such a great job with my previous request. When these edits are implemented, I believe the article will be a much better resource for people interested in knowing more about Quad. I really appreciate all your work. Thanks again, Tina at Quad (talk) 17:49, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Dundee Public Art Programme
HI, I don't know if this is the correct way of communicating and as I unfamiliar with the format. Can I please ask that you don't refer to me in the article. Also the quote re debt and SAC funding is incorrect and misleading. SAC changed their funding to all public art agencies at this time and was not due to the finances of DPAP. And there is a lot more detail around the DPAP finances which cannot simply be summed up as 'debt' with the implication that this caused the end of the programme. The decision to wind down the company was based on the decline of opportunities in the city and there was simply no need for a full time development organisation of its type. Many other companies managing public art programmes in the UK went through similar situations - they were very much of their time. And in that context, given all the good work to sustain the programme for as long as we did and create lots of opportunities for artists in the city and beyond, it was shocking to see the description 'inexperienced' next to my name and all that it infers. I hope you will take time to read this and respect my request to not want to be referred to in the article. thanks John Chazziesdad (talk) 12:46, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

- Sorry, I believe that was the result of an edit conflict, although it is a bit strange (every other time I've had an edit conflict, it gave me an alert prior to saving the page). Perhaps this is the fault of the MediaWiki software (as AN/I has by far the most revisions of any page on any Wikimedia project, and strange things happen there sometimes).
