Pronunciation

I've heard a few people pronounce 'snorkel' as 'shnorkel' in English. Is there any basis for this? Strontium10538 (talk) 23:38, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leading British and American English dictionaries such as the Cambridge and the Merriam-Webster specify a pronunciation of the word "snorkel" starting with "sn" and not "shn". I too have heard some English speakers pronounce the word as "shnorkel", perhaps in deference to the original German loanword "Schnorchel", pronounced IPA: [ˈʃnɔʁçl̩], which does sound like "shn" at the start. The word for "snorkel" in Czech, "šnorchl", also comes from German and in the former language the "šn" in "šnorchl" is pronounced "shn". The "shnorkel" pronunciation of "snorkel" in English, however, is not the "official" pronunciation of the word in either American or British English. Thank you for all your hard work on this article. There are no obvious errors in the text and any additions that I would want to make would be relatively minor. By way of example, the historical and recent use of dry suits for wilderness snorkelling in rivers and lakes, which makes a nice contrast with the popular image of snorkelling as an exclusively warm-water activity designed for tropical resorts. I have twenty-first century newspaper articles to evidence this new trend that can be referenced in this article and the "snorkeling" one. Helmardine (talk) 12:08, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Helmardine That would be great, Wikipedia articles are seldom finished as there is nearly always something to add when we can find it. Full face snorkel-masks

It appears that a proposal was made in October-November 2022 at the British Standards Institution to introduce a standard on full-face snorkel masks. Further to the above, I have visited the BSI website, where I discovered at https://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/projects/2023-00678#/section that the Full Face Snorkel Mask proposal has now reached the approval stage. The full title of the Standard: "BS 8647:2024 Respiratory equipment – Full-face snorkel masks – Specification and test method". The next stage is publication. I have submitted a proposal to BSI for a future Standard to include half-face snorkel-masks with eye and nose coverage but without mouth enclosure. From my perspective, a national Standard confined to full-face types of snorkel-masks represents an incomplete response to the issue of combined snorkel-masks.Helmardine (talk) 11:57, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
