Compare Classical Syriac ܢܬܢ (nəṯan, to give) and Akkadian 𒈾𒁕𒉡𒌝 (nadānum, to give). Possibly cognate with Arabic نَتَنَ (natana, to give off a foul smell, to stink), which may have undergone semantic narrowing.
