Cognate with Old Frisian stonda, Old Saxon standan, Old High German stantan, Old Norse standa, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (standan). The Germanic source is cognate with Latin stare and Ancient Greek ἵστημι (hístēmi).
