College Football National Championship Odds: There's Already Been Movement

The Michigan Wolverines trounced the Washington Huskies in the college football national championship earlier this month, giving Jim Harbaugh his first title.

FanDuel Sportsbook hasn't wasted any time this offseason listing college football championship odds for the 2024-25 campaign. We've already taken a glance at the odds for next season's national championship winner, with Michigan and the Alabama Crimson Tide being among the favorites at the time.

However, with transfers and coaching changes dominating the college football landscape in recent weeks, odds for certain teams have shifted. Let's take a look at an updated list of the favorites to win next season's national championship ahead of a year where the college football playoff will be expanded from four to 12 teams.

Georgia Bulldogs (+300)

After winning back-to-back national titles, the Georgia Bulldogs weren't selected to be one of the four teams in the college football playoffs this past season. The Bulldogs finished with a 13-1 record, and the team's lone loss came against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

Despite missing out on the playoffs, Georgia made a statement by cruising to a 63-3 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in the Orange Bowl. It's safe to say that head coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs are motivated to show they deserved a spot in the dance in the 2023-24 campaign.

Ahead of the team's win over Florida State, Carson Beck announced he would be returning at quarterback for Georgia next season. Beck completed 72.4% of his passes for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions this past season.

Returning a quarterback can be invaluable for college football teams in a world where players are transferring consistently. Having Beck on offense along with a defense that will likely be among the nation's best -- yet again -- makes Georgia the favorites to win it all in 2024-25.

Ohio State Buckeyes (+500)

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been one of the most active teams in the transfer portal this offseason. Kyle McCord, who started at quarterback for the Buckeyes this past campaign, is transferring to Syracuse for next season.

Ohio State has replaced McCord at quarterback with Will Howard, who already has the fourth-best odds to win the Heisman, per FanDuel Sportsbook's Heisman Trophy betting odds. Howard recorded career-best marks in completion percentage (61.3%), passing yards (2,643), passing touchdowns (24), and rushing touchdowns (9) in his final season with the Kansas State Wildcats in 2023-24.

Aside from Howard, the Buckeyes are returning a slew of skill players despite losing Marvin Harrison Jr. to the NFL. TreVeyon Henderson and Emeka Egbuka are the notable names who are set to return for their senior seasons for Ohio State.

Since losing to Alabama in the National Championship in 2020, head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes have gone 11-2 in three consecutive years. The number of returning players and the talent added via the transfer portal -- including former 'Bama star safety Caleb Downs -- have some believing in Ohio State again. It does help that Harbaugh could be on his way to the NFL from Michigan, making the path through the Big Ten a little easier.

Texas Longhorns (+700)

Another quarterback who is electing to stay for his final season is Quinn Ewers. Ewers led the Texas Longhorns to a 12-2 record this past campaign to earn a bid in the playoffs before losing to Washington in the Sugar Bowl.

At the moment, Ewers and Beck are tied for the top odds to win the Heisman Trophy next season. The Longhorns could be losing some of their weapons via the NFL draft, but the offense is expected to keep chugging along with Steve Sarkisian returning at head coach.

Texas was a part of the Big 12 from 1996 to 2023, evolving into one of the most prominent programs in college football in the process. After a long stint in the Big 12, the Longhorns will be joining the SEC in 2024, so we'll get a chance to see if they can hang around with the elite teams in the conference.

The last time the Longhorns won a national title was in 2005 when Mack Brown was the head coach of the school. Even with Texas joining a more competitive conference, there are lofty expectations for UT entering next season.

Alabama Crimson Tide (+1100)

The most surprising news in college football since this past season concluded was Nick Saban retiring as the head coach at Alabama. Saban coached the Crimson Tide from 2007 to 2023, leading the school to nine National Championship Game appearances and six National Championship wins.

Replicating the success Saban experienced at Alabama is going to be a tall task, but the Crimson Tide are hoping Kalen DeBoer can keep the program on the same path. DeBoer spent the last two seasons coaching Washington, and he recorded a 25-3 record there, which includes the lopsided defeat to Michigan in the title game.

What makes things a bit easier for DeBoer is the fact Jalen Milroe is returning to start at quarterback for the Crimson Tide next season. Despite being benched at one point early in the year, Milroe finished with 2,834 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, six interceptions, 531 rushing yards, and 12 rushing touchdowns this past season.

While there are going to be a ton of moving parts for the Crimson Tide under DeBoer, Alabama is a blue-blood program that will always entice the top prospects around the nation. If DeBoer can carry over his success from Washington and produce results quickly, the Crimson Tide could still be in the mix to begin the post-Saban era.

If you feel strongly about how the Tide will fare in their first year without Saban, you can check out Alabama's win total over/under at FanDuel Sportsbook, which is set at 9.5.
