What

Investigate whether the <hgroup> element is semantically appropriate for headings with captions – in particular when the caption is outside of the heading (as we provide options for captions both inside and out).

Why

The 'Subheadings, subtitles, alternative titles and taglines in HTML' post from Steve Faulkner on the TPGi blog suggests that the<hgroup> element may be appropriate for our headings with captions.

Questions to answer

  • Do the recommendations in the blog post apply to headings with captions?
  • Has anything changed since the blog post was published that may affect our decision? For example, discussions relating to the role of the <hgroup> that may have been resolved later?
  • What changes need to be made to support using the <hgroup> element for headings with captions?

Done when

  • Questions have been answered or we have a clearer idea of how to get to our goal
  • Findings have been reviewed and agreed with at least one other person
  • Findings have been shared, e.g: via a write-up on the ticket, at a show & tell or team meeting
