Since Moffitt Library opened in 1970, students have taken to it like butterflies to a garden. But after a half-century, the library needed freshening up. In 2016, students fluttered to Moffitt’s newly renovated top two floors. In 2024–25, the lower three floors will begin a transformation of their own that will include the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning. Once complete, the makeover will ensure the library maintains its place at the heart of the undergraduate experience, and help meet the evolving needs of today’s students — from their studies to their social lives.
Thanks to a generous capstone gift from long-time Berkeley friend and alumna Nadine Tang M.S.W. ’75, Moffitt Library will begin a renovation of the lower three floors, which will include the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning.
While much has changed since 1881 — when students could raise their eyes to the distant rotunda ceiling of Bacon Hall, the campus’s first library — the UC Berkeley Library is still a place where students can study quietly and dream big.
Al and Marguerite Johnson, alums and longtime campus partners, made a $10 million gift in 2017 that was shared equally among the business and social welfare schools, the University Library, and a chancellor fund that supports pressing issues.
