Arkansas drivers pay an average of $121 per month for liability insurance and $286 per month for full coverage. That’s more expensive than the national average, possibly because of the state’s high traffic fatality rate: 22.9 deaths per 100,000 people in 2021.[1]

Here’s how to find affordable car insurance, compare quotes, and get the auto coverage you need in the Bear State.

Quick Facts
  • The cheapest auto insurer for full coverage is State Farm, with rates of $59 per month.

  • Arkansas follows modified comparative negligence standards, meaning you can only recover damages from the other driver if you’re less than 50% at fault in an accident.[2]

  • Insurance companies in Arkansas must offer a defensive driver discount for drivers older than 55 who have successfully completed an approved course.[3]

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Arkansas

Many car insurance companies offer auto policies to Arkansas drivers, and it can be hard to find the one that best fits your budget. These tips can help you land the lowest rates:

  • Compare quotes. Use a quote-comparison tool or work with a car insurance agent to get quotes from at least three different car insurance companies. Then, choose the auto insurance company with the cheapest premiums and the right coverage for your needs.

  • Look for discounts. Many car insurance companies offer discounts to customers, including an auto-pay discount, multi-car discount, and loyalty discount. Find out which discounts apply to you and take advantage of them.

  • Bundle policies. If you purchase your car insurance from the same company as your home insurance, renters insurance, or life insurance, you may be able to lock in more affordable auto insurance coverage.

  • Drive safely. Serious traffic violations, like speeding, at-fault accidents, and DUIs, can increase your car insurance costs. For the cheapest rates, do your best to be a responsible driver.

Car insurance requirements in Arkansas

Arkansas is an at-fault state, also called a tort state. This means the driver responsible for the accident must pay for the damages and injuries they cause to drivers and passengers in another vehicle. However, the car insurance laws in the state are unique in that they follow modified comparative negligence standards.

Under modified comparative negligence standards, you can collect damages from the other driver only if you’re less than 50% at fault.[2] The Bear State requires bodily injury liability coverage and property liability coverage and mandates proof of insurance when law enforcement requests it.

Here are the minimum insurance requirements in Arkansas:[3]

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

While the coverage amounts above meet the minimum requirements in Arkansas, you might want to upgrade your coverage with any of the following options:

Arkansas car insurance quotes by credit tier

Like most states, Arkansas allows auto insurance companies to consider your credit history when underwriting policies and determining rates.[7] Because insurers believe drivers with good and excellent credit are less likely to file claims, they usually offer them cheaper premiums. And drivers with poor credit tend to pay more expensive rates.

Here’s how your credit history affects your car insurance rates in Arkansas.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
