Finding cheap car insurance in Georgia can depend on various factors, including your driving history, your age, and even your credit history.[1] Insurify data shows that the cheapest insurance companies in the Peach State have average prices lower than the state average monthly costs for full-coverage auto insurance and liability-only coverage. Comparing car insurance quotes is the best way to find affordable coverage for your needs.

Here’s what you need to know about finding cheap car insurance in Georgia, no matter your situation.

Quick Facts
  • The average cost of car insurance in Georgia is $146 per month for liability coverage and $241 per month for full coverage.

  • Georgia is an at-fault state, which means the driver responsible for an accident is financially responsible for damages.

3 of the cheapest car insurance companies in Georgia

Finding inexpensive car insurance may feel out of your control since insurance companies ultimately determine your rates.

“Insurers use more than a dozen personal rating factors to determine the cost of your auto insurance policy,” says Mark Friedlander, Insurance Information Institute director of corporate communications.

But that doesn’t mean drivers have no control over their premium costs. Friedlander adds that “most [factors] are things a driver can control, such as motor vehicle record, credit-based insurance score, [and] claims history.”

While demographic factors, such as marital status, location, age, and gender, can also affect your rates, maintaining a clean driving record and credit history, as well as limiting your claims, can go a long way to keeping your insurance costs low.[1]

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Just OK

If you have extremely low mileage vehicles (like show cars), do not put them on the Auto-Owners policy. There are specialty insurers that offer much better pricing/value for these types of vehicles.

Sometimes Better Than Others

They're good, it just takes a while for them to do anything.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Georgia

The cost of auto insurance in Georgia depends on a number of factors. Some of those factors are under your control. These include your driving record, the type of car you drive, the number of miles you drive, and how much insurance coverage you purchase. But other factors are out of your control — such as your age, gender, and location.[1]

Even though you can’t control all the factors that determine your insurance premiums, here are several strategies you can adopt to find the cheapest car insurance in Georgia:

  • Increase your deductible. A higher deductible means lower premiums. Just have a plan for paying the higher deductible if you need to file a claim.

  • Bundle insurance. Many insurance companies offer discounts to buyers who get their auto and homeowners insurance from them.

  • Drive defensively. Maintaining a clean driving record is one of the best ways to get and keep low insurance rates.

  • Shop around. Comparing quotes from multiple insurers is the best way to find the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Georgia: Auto-Owners

Drivers who want to lower their insurance costs may choose a liability-only insurance policy. This kind of policy will only cover the costs of property damage or bodily injury to a third party. If you cause an accident, your liability coverage will pay for damage and medical expenses for the person you hit. It won’t pay to repair or replace your car or pay for the medical care you or your passengers may need.

Liability insurance in Georgia costs an average of $146 per month. The following insurance companies offer cheap liability-only car insurance in the Peach State.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Georgia: Auto-Owners

Full-coverage car insurance offers drivers more financial protection than liability-only coverage. Car insurance requirements in Georgia

Georgia is an at-fault state, which means that the person at fault for causing an accident is responsible for paying damages.[3] If you cause an accident, your liability insurance pays for the other party’s damages.

But what if there’s an accident and both parties are partially to blame? Under Georgia’s modified comparative negligence law, any party who is less than 50% responsible for an accident is eligible to receive compensation, although the percentage of blame may reduce the compensation amount.[4] Here are the state-minimum insurance requirements in Georgia:[5]

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/abffe6238f/financial-protection.svg

    Bodily injury liability

    • $25,000 per person

    • $50,000 per accident

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/db598219e3/damage-from-aircraft.svg

    Property damage liability

    • $25,000 per accident

These minimum requirements are just that: the bare minimum necessary to drive legally in Georgia. Peach State drivers may purchase policies with higher liability coverage and may also purchase additional coverages, such as:

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/665da91bf7/comprehensive-coverage.svg

    Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your vehicle due to events other than accidents. This includes theft, fire, flood, and weather-related damage.

    Collision coverage

Collision coverage pays to repair your vehicle if you’re the at-fault party in an accident. It covers collisions with other vehicles, and objects such as trees, fences, and light poles. It also covers damage from rollover accidents.

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/5285c4cd74/uninsured-or-underinsured-motorist-coverage.svg

    Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for damages if you’re in a car accident and the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or has too little insurance.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

An incident on your driving record can increase your insurance premiums. Whether it was an at-fault accident, speeding ticket, or DUI, your insurance company will take notice of any serious moving violation, as it can indicate that you’re at a higher risk of getting into a collision and making a claim.[6]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket: Auto-Owners

Driving faster than the speed limit can seem like no big deal, but there’s an excellent reason why Georgia state troopers introduced Operation Slow Down in 2022: Speeding is dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 23% of traffic fatalities in Georgia in 2020 were speeding-related.[7]

Receiving a speeding ticket is a good reminder to take it easy on the gas pedal. But your insurance premiums can rise for several years due to the increased risk of high-speed collisions. The average cost of full coverage for Georgia drivers with speeding tickets is $336 per month.

The table below shows how rates can change for drivers with clean records versus drivers with speeding tickets.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: Auto-Owners

Drivers with an at-fault accident on their record see an average rate increase of 26% in Georgia, although the specific rate increase may vary depending on the severity of the accident, your driving record, and other factors. For example, slipping on an icy road and causing a fender bender is likely to result in a lower rate increase than speeding through a red light and T-boning another car.[6]

In Georgia, the overall average cost of car insurance for drivers with an accident is $279 per month. The following table shows some of the least expensive insurance companies for drivers with an at-fault accident in the state.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI: Auto-Owners

Driving under the influence is dangerous to the intoxicated driver and all the other drivers and pedestrians on the road. The police take DUIs very seriously, as do insurance companies. Receiving a DUI could result in much higher premiums for several years or the possibility of your insurer not renewing your policy.[6] Penalties for a DUI in Georgia include driver's license and registration suspension, significant fines, and even the possibility of jail time.

On average, Georgia drivers with a DUI pay $397 per month for full coverage and $241 for liability-only insurance. But several insurance companies in Georgia provide coverage to drivers with a DUI at a more affordable price:

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: Auto-Owners

Age has its privileges — including lower auto insurance premiums. Generally, insurance rates begin to decrease for drivers around age 35, as these drivers have both more maturity and experience behind the wheel than their younger counterparts.

But once you turn 70, you may see your auto insurance rates going up again. That’s because despite their decades of experience, seniors may start having slower reflexes and other potential declines that make them more likely to get into an accident.[8]

Senior drivers in Georgia pay a monthly average of $116 for liability-only car insurance and $191 for full coverage. The following insurers offer cheap car insurance for seniors in Georgia.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: COUNTRY Financial

Teen drivers pay the highest insurance rates of any age demographic. Not only are these young drivers inexperienced, but they’re also much more prone to engage in risky behavior, such as dangerous driving.[9] That combination means teens are more likely to get into accidents, and insurance companies charge rates that reflect that likelihood.

Teen drivers in Georgia pay an average of $457 per month for full-coverage car insurance and $277 for liability only.

Teens can reduce their car insurance costs in various ways, such as:

  • Remaining on their parents’ insurance policies

  • Driving a safe car; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety offers recommendations for safe, practical, and affordable cars for teens

  • Getting good grades, as many insurers offer good student discounts

  • Enrolling in a defensive driving course

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
