Looking for car insurance in the Show-Me State? On average, Missouri drivers can expect to pay $164 per month, close to the national average of $159.

While Missouri requires bodily and property liability insurance, it doesn’t require additional insurance like personal injury protection (PIP). This helps keep Missouri car insurance rates close to the national average. States that require additional coverage, such as PIP, tend to have higher car insurance premiums. Always compare car insurance quotes before buying a policy.

Quick Facts
  • On average, Missouri drivers pay $99 per month for liability coverage and $230 for full-coverage insurance.

  • Insurers in Missouri can consider your credit history when setting car insurance rates.

  • Drivers in Missouri must carry the state’s minimum liability insurance coverage.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

My payment increased from $93 to $108. I don't understand why. I thought the longer the policy (in years), the lower it would go. I'm on a fixed income.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Missouri

If you want to find the cheapest car insurance in Missouri, it can help to understand how insurers calculate your insurance premiums. Insurance companies look at factors including your age, gender, location, the type of car you drive, how often you drive, and the type of insurance you want.

To keep your insurance premiums as low as possible, consider the following tips:

  • Compare insurance companies. Car insurance prices can vary widely between companies. It’s a good idea to compare several insurance companies to find the one that fits your needs and budget.

  • Increase your deductible. Your deductible is the amount of money you pay before your insurance takes over. Agreeing to pay a higher deductible can reduce your premiums substantially.

  • Bundle your insurance. Purchasing multiple insurance products from the same company, such as home insurance and auto insurance, can result in a discounted rate.

Missouri state law requires all vehicle owners and operators to carry liability insurance. Liability insurance covers your legal liabilities should you injure another driver or damage their property in an at-fault accident.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

An incident includes speeding tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), at-fault accidents, or other moving violations. When car insurers calculate your insurance premiums, they’re trying to determine how high of a risk it is to insure you. Having a driving record with multiple incidents demonstrates a higher level of risk and typically results in more expensive insurance.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket: USAA

Speeding can affect your safety as well as other drivers. Speeding increases the potential for you to lose control of your vehicle and is a contributing factor to traffic fatalities. Since insurers view speeding as an increased risk, it can also result in higher insurance premiums.

Missouri uses a points system when you’re convicted of a traffic violation. If you’re caught speeding, you can receive up to three points against your license. Accumulating eight or more points in an 18-month period can result in the suspension of your driving privileges.[3]

The average cost of car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket in Missouri is $326 per month for full coverage and $140 for liability only.

Driving while under the influence can have serious consequences, and insurance companies take this seriously. Having a DUI can greatly increase your insurance premiums and potentially result in other serious consequences.

In Missouri, if you hurt or kill someone because you were driving under the influence, you risk the following:

  • Two to seven years in jail

  • A $5,000 fine

  • Loss of your license for five years[3]

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: USAA

Age is one of the variables insurers use to determine your insurance premiums. While insurance is high among young drivers, premiums tend to decrease for drivers older than 25.

Drivers 55 years and older often experience reduced insurance costs. This is attributed to driving less, having safer driving behaviors, and taking advantage of age-related discounts.[4]

Then, around age 70, the cost of insurance starts to increase once again. One of the reasons is that drivers 70 and older have higher fatal crash rates. The higher rate is largely due to their increased level of vulnerability in a crash.

The average monthly cost of car insurance for senior drivers in Missouri is $164 for full coverage and $70 for liability only.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: USAA

Teen drivers present the highest risk to insurance companies, with a fatal crash rate almost three times as high as drivers age 20 and older. A combination of factors, including inexperience, distracted driving, and speeding, contribute to teen drivers’ higher levels of risk.

To reduce the amount you pay for insurance as a teen driver, consider the following tips:

  • Stay on your parents’ insurance plan. It’s generally cheaper to join your parents’ insurance plan than to purchase one on your own.

  • Look for teen driver discounts. Many insurance companies offer discounts to teen drivers, such as good student discounts for teens who can maintain a certain average, as well as discounts for teens who take driver training courses.

  • Drive a safe car. The type of car you drive can also affect your insurance premiums. Cars with high-quality safety equipment might help you qualify for cheaper insurance.

The average cost of car insurance for teen drivers in Missouri is $421 per month for full-coverage car insurance and $181 for liability only.

Missouri car insurance quotes by credit tier

Insurance companies in Missouri are allowed to use your credit history in determining your car insurance rates.[5] Studies suggest that how you manage your finances is a predictor of how likely you are to file an insurance claim.[6] Generally, an excellent or good credit score will result in a lower insurance premium, while a poor credit score can increase the cost.

The table below provides average monthly quotes for each of the credit tiers.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
