ON ISLAND TIME
SUMMER 2024

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Summertime is fun time, and for my team, it’s a beautiful opportunity to see kids with their parents and grandparents. It reminds us all of what is really important: making memories with those we love.

At Divi, we ensure that there are always plenty of great amenities and activities for all age groups. So, you’ll always find sparkling pools, safe beaches, plenty of great food and drink options, fun bingo and family games, energizing water aerobics, tennis, paddle tennis, golf, fitness centers, and, of course, comfy rooms and large suites that offer plenty of space to spread out.

In this issue of On Island Time, I’m delighted to introduce some talented new team members. Greg Greenbaum is responsible for our 5-Star dive operation Divi Dive Bonaire, and Kevin Lujan is our new Revenue Manager in Aruba. Please get to know these talented members on pages 4 and 5.

As many of you know, Divi has been very busy this year renovating several of our resorts, and I am happy to say we are making great progress.

On Aruba, we continue to work diligently on our largest project at Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort. We are making progress on the beachfront tower units and have begun renovating the Phoenix 1 project, which consists of the tower and villa units and the villa pool area. We recently opened the Wave Shack, where guests can enjoy great pizza, paninis, and burgers. I am happy to report positive feedback from our owners, members, and guests on this new eatery.

Also on Aruba, at Divi Village Golf, renovations have begun on suites in buildings A and B as part of a threeyear upgrade to buildings A - D.

At Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino on Bonaire, we’re excited to announce that the rebuilding of our main dive pier will be completed this July, and renovations to the pool-view hotel rooms are underway.

At Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, we have removed the old 700 building and are adding all new furniture to the pureocean restaurant, beach, deck, and pool.

At Divi Little Bay Beach Resort, we have begun upgrades to the one-bedroom studios near Gizmo’s Bar & Grill, and all three pools have been adorned with new furniture.

For more renovation information and updates, please see pages 6 and 7.

Happy 30th Birthday to Gizmo, our Divi Diva at Divi Little Bay on St. Maarten. 30 years ago, when I brought her to the island, I had no idea that she would become such a beloved part of our team and quite the personality we’ve all come to love. Please enjoy pictures from her birthday celebrations on pages 10 and 11.

On the culinary front, we are excited about the new Mesa Latina menu at Windows on Aruba restaurant, created by talented Executive Chef Darwin Torres. On pages 14 and 15, you can read more about it and even make one of the dishes at home!

For over 50 years, our Divi Resorts teams have been committed to helping and contributing to the needs of our islands. In June 2023, we partnered with Gerrit Griffith to help ensure that kids in Aruba get a healthy breakfast to start their day. Thank you to all the owners, members, and guests who participated in this program, helping us raise over $136,800 for this worthy cause so far. You can learn more on page 18.

We are privileged to have Vernon Hodge, a shining example of loyalty and dedication, among our staff. Vernon has been a part of Divi Little Bay for half a century, and we are truly grateful for his unwavering commitment to his team and the company. Vernon, we salute you and thank you for all your hard work. Read more about Vernon on Page 20.

We always appreciate your feedback, so please keep those TripAdvisor reviews and social media comments coming. We love to read about your experiences and find new ways to improve and enhance your stay.

Safe travels,
Marco Galaverna President & COO, Divi Resorts

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Greg Greenbaum - Divi Dive Bonaire Dive Operations Manager

Greg Greenbaum brings a unique blend of expertise to his role as our new Dive Operations Manager. With a background as an emergency department doctor, Greg has spent decades in the medical field, honing his leadership skills and commitment to excellence. Transitioning from medicine to diving, Greg’s journey into the underwater world began over four decades ago, leading him to explore dive sites across the globe.

What drew you to Bonaire specifically — have you dived elsewhere?

My wife and I got into scuba diving around 35 years ago, so we started traveling to new dive sites whenever we got the chance and we both agreed that this is a lifestyle we would both enjoy. We chose Bonaire because we love the diving and we love the island itself and the people – it’s not in the hurricane belt and every time we’ve ever visited, on the day it’s time to go home we’re always asking ourselves, “Why are we going home?” Eventually, we decided not to go home!

What are your goals for Divi Dive Bonaire?

I’m thrilled to join the incredible team at Divi Dive Bonaire. We have a fantastic group of divers and instructors. My general goal is to continue with the fantastic teams at Divi Dive and Divi Flamingo to make this the best dive operation on the island.

DON'T FORGET:

Score 10% Off 2-Tank Dive Packages when you book by June 30, 2024.

Check availability at: www.diviresorts.com/specials.htm#dive

Sustainability and conservation are important values in Bonaire – how do you plan to uphold those values?

We’re going to continue working with STINAPA and with the reef renewal program here in Bonaire to promote preservation and conservation of the natural resources that we are blessed to have. This is important — we want our kids and our kids’ kids to be able to experience the natural beauty of our reefs and our oceans.

What are you most looking forward to in the future with this new role?

Wow…so much. I guess I’m really excited about the challenge of getting us to reach our goals at Divi Flamingo of being the best dive shop and the best dive resort on the island. When I say ‘the best,’ I mean that we aim to have the best customer service, the safest program, and exceed the expectations of all our customers while upholding values of sustainability and conservation.

Kevin Lujan - Revenue & Wholesale Manager, Aruba

We are thrilled to welcome Kevin Lujan as the new Revenue & Wholesale Manager for our Aruba properties. He joins us from Peru, with a background in financial administration and revenue management. His extensive experience and educational background make him a valuable addition to our team.

What do you love most about your job?

The best part of my job is the opportunity to constantly learn and grow. I’m regularly exposed to new challenges, which helps me develop both professionally and personally.

What are your goals and aspirations as the Revenue & Wholesale Manager for Divi Resorts’ Aruba Locations?

My career aspirations are centered around continuous growth and skill enhancement. I aim to keep advancing in my field, always seeking new opportunities to learn and improve.

What makes Aruba a unique market and vacation destination?

Aruba is unique because it feels like a second home to everyone who visits. There’s a sense of joy and safety here that is unmatched in the Caribbean and beyond. It’s a place where visitors can truly relax and feel at ease.

How do you see Divi Resorts growing in the future? I see Divi Resorts becoming the premier destination on the island, offering the most well-rounded, satisfactory vacation experience for our guests. Our goal is to be the top choice for anyone visiting Aruba.

What is your background and how does it relate to your current role?

I began my career as part of a financial team, which provided a solid foundation in understanding base revenue. This experience perfectly complemented my transition into revenue management. My financial background helps me effectively manage and optimize our revenue streams in my current role.

ISLAND ADVENTURES: ARUBA BUCKET LIST

Postcard-worthy beaches, world-class dining, stunning resorts, natural deserts, superior snorkeling, lively nightlife, and some of the most accommodating, friendliest people you’ll ever meet can all be found on the one happy island of Aruba. At a balmy, sunny, year-round average of about 80 degrees, Aruba is a tropical oasis and a vacation jackof-all-trades. A vacation full of adventure and exploration is possible, but so is one full of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Aruba’s unique blend of natural wonders and vibrant culture offers something for every type of traveler. Divi Resorts Communications Specialist, Jolee Sullivan, adventured around Aruba to sample all of these one-of-a-kind experiences for herself!

DE PALM ISLAND TOURS UTV & NATURAL POOL TOUR: OFF-ROAD THRILLS AND NATURAL WONDERS

If you’re not afraid of a little dirt, and you want to really see all that Aruba has to offer — from sand and surf to rugged desert and beyond — this is the excursion for you. De Palm Island Tours’ UTV and Natural Pool tour covers two-thirds of the island, showcasing its diverse landscapes and hidden gems, and it’s a great way to satisfy your craving for adrenaline!

Strap in and rev up your UTV as you ride through town, getting a glimpse of Aruba’s local life, shops, and people. Make sure to keep up, though! With a fun and informative guide leading the way, you’ll head off the paved road and navigate winding trails through a rugged desert landscape to reach the California Lighthouse and Aruba’s famous natural bridge. We highly recommend wearing sunglasses (or purchasing the goggles offered) and keeping your complimentary face mask on to protect yourself from all of that desert dust.

Stop into the local eatery for a cold Balashi beer or ice cream while you take in the expansive views. Next, you’ll hop on a Jeep — hold onto your hats, it’s a bumpy ride — and tour another stretch of rocky desert. If you’re as lucky as us, you’ll even see some adorable baby mountain goats in the wild! Then, you’ll park and descend a stretch of steps to the natural pool, where you can take a refreshing dip surrounded by crashing blue waves and towering rock formations. Look out for the crabs! De Palm will drop you right back off at your resort, free of charge. Explore tours at depalm.com.

JOLLY PIRATES SNORKELING: DIVE INTO CARIBBEAN SPLENDOR

If you’re traveling to the Caribbean, snorkeling is an absolute must. The waters are crystal-clear, perfectly temperate, and abundant with a variety of marine life. Snorkeling options are plentiful in Aruba, but we’d stick with Jolly Pirates. With multiple snorkeling sites,

informative, engaging staff, fun music, cocktails, mingling, and of course, the chance to sail across Aruba’s waters on a big wooden pirate ship, it’s easy to see why they’ve got a glowing reputation from locals and tourists alike.

We hopped on a smaller boat to ride to the iconic wooden pirate ship and stopped at three dive sites, including a WWII 400-foot shipwreck and Catalina Bay’s colorful corals and reefs. We swam right through schools of thousands of fish and even got to wave hello to a friendly sea turtle as we sailed! The crew kept drinks flowing (the Pirate’s Poison is a must) and served a tasty Caribbean BBQ platter for lunch — vegetarian options are available as well. You can choose to lounge under the shade on cushioned benches, or sprawl out on the sunny deck. Kids as young as three and even the crew members let loose to brave the ship’s famous rope swing, and the warm breeze was welcome as we took in the panoramic views of Aruba on our ride back to shore. Check out all the fun you can have with Jolly Pirates at www.jolly-pirates.com

PARASAILING: SOAR HIGH ABOVE THE ARUBA

Take your Aruba adventure to new heights, or as they say at Fun 4 Every 1, get “legally high” with a parasailing adventure! Located directly next to the bustling De Palm Pier, Fun 4 Every 1 offers numerous water sports and excursions. We walked right off the sand to our boat and joined a couple celebrating their 30th year vacationing on Aruba! It was our first time parasailing, but the couple braved the windy skies like pros numerous times before, and the crew made us feel safe and at ease.

As you soar high above the sparkling Caribbean waters, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline and beyond. We sailed up, up, up with a friendly and experienced crew member who pointed out sights like the California Lighthouse and numerous sea turtles swimming along below. We were apprehensive of Aruba’s strong winds, but were pleasantly surprised to find that the sensation of floating peacefully above the ocean is nothing short of magical, making parasailing a must-do activity for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Book your parasailing adventure at fun4every1.com

AROUND ARUBA SUNSET SAIL & SNORKEL: SIP, SAIL, AND SOAK IN THE SUNSET

If you think Aruba’s waters are magical during the day, you’ll be simply enchanted at night. We boarded Around Aruba’s catamaran in the late afternoon for a snorkeling sunset sail that we will truly never forget. The crew stops at two different snorkel sites, including the famous WWII Antilla shipwreck. Complimentary drinks are flowing as the sun dips below the horizon, casting hues of orange and pink across the sky. Hang out on board or on the hammocks up front and soak in the views while the crew passes out sandwiches and fresh fruit. There’s even a fun water slide that you can zip down right off the side of the boat!

As the sun dips, the party atmosphere buzzes, and the crew starts to show off their DJ skills. By the time it’s dark, you’ll be dancing on board under flashing lights with sparkling views of the Aruba high-rise district lit up around you as you sail towards shore. This excursion is the ultimate combination of adventure, romantic views, and party vibes. Explore sailing and snorkeling adventures here

KUKOO KUNUKU: A NIGHT OF REVELRY AND FUN

Even if you’re committed to a low-key vacation, you do not want to miss out on Aruba’s nightlife scene! For a night out unlike any other, hop aboard the Kukoo Kunuku party bus. The auspiciously bright red bus is impossible to miss, and will pick you up right from your hotel — when you hear the trumpets tooting, you’ll know the party has arrived! This adults-only tour promises a lively evening filled with music, drinks, laughter, and mingling with locals and other tourists.

No matter the size of your group, your colorful hosts will be determined to give you a fun time — and they’re experts, so they will succeed! You’ll start out with a champagne toast at the California Lighthouse before heading to three bars and a group dinner (your first drink is free at each spot!). We dined and got to know each other at a delicious Peruvian restaurant to fuel up for a lively night ahead. The windowless bus is lined with hand-painted maracas, and you’ll earn plenty of smiles and waves from all the locals you pass by.

The bars are filled with a lively island party atmosphere and people from all walks of life — expect to dance and laugh with just about everyone! By the end of the night, our group was exchanging phone numbers and promising to stay in touch. We were even sad to leave our hosts behind because we had such a great time with them. We couldn’t recommend this tour more, so hop on-board, dance the night away, and shake those maracas! Book your tour: www.kukookunuku.com

If you were fortunate enough to attend Gizmo Week in St. Maarten from June 1 to 7, you experienced a one-of-a-kind celebration! Divi Little Bay Beach Resort set the stage for a week-long extravaganza dedicated to our Divi Diva Gizmo on her 30th birthday, and a vibrant atmosphere reverberated throughout the resort all week.

We shared laughter, drinks, friendly competition, and so much fun. The entire resort was a hub of activity, and guests, staff, and locals alike came together, forging bonds and creating memories that will last a lifetime, all thanks to our special lady Gizmo.

“Gizmo isn’t just any bird. She’s an icon and a local favorite. For over 30 years, she’s been through hurricanes with barely a ruffled feather, entertained and flirted with troops, and made everyone smile by being the center of attention! Gizmo, you’ve earned the right to be called Divi’s Diva and you’ve earned the biggest birthday celebration this resort has seen in 50 years!” - King Beau Beau

Sue and Steven Bastarche

For many, the idea of traveling across the Caribbean, experiencing diverse cultures, and enjoying luxurious stays at resorts where the staff knows your name sounds like a dream. For Sue and Steven Bastarche, this dream is a delightful reality thanks to the Divi Vacation Club. We chatted with Sue Bastarche about her experience as a President’s Elite member, and how it’s given her a new sense of home.

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, the Bastarche’s first experience with Divi was on St. Maarten in 2016. “We initially stayed at another property, but we were eyeing Divi Little Bay the entire time,” Sue recalls. “The next year, we stayed at the Divi and joined the vacation club on the spot.”

One of the standout benefits of being a Divi Vacation Club member, according to Sue, is the flexibility it offers. “Booking vacations through other companies didn’t feel like we were coming home. At Divi, we feel like we’re side-by-side with people who are doing the same thing,” she explains. This sense of community and familiarity is something Sue and her husband cherish deeply. They’ve visited six of the seven Divi properties, and just recently did their first inter-island trip from Aruba to Bonaire in January. “The staff is amazing. As soon as they see us, they know us by name, whether it’s a server or someone else. It’s just a different caliber of service.”

Since the Bastarches have hopped all around the Caribbean with Divi, we asked Sue what sets each island apart from the others. “Aruba is where we go when we want to be busy — though we could go and just do the beach if we wanted to. We’ll stay at Village Golf or at Phoenix and it’s just walking distance from everything in town. We go to St. Maarten for the culture, and we

went back last year to experience Oceans, which was incredible. And Bonaire is just different,” she says fondly.

“Bonaire is 100 percent our home,” she declares. Sue shares how her experience at Divi Flamingo Beach Resort evolved from learning to scuba dive to forming deep connections with the staff. “Now, the staff knows we’re coming, and we actually get hugs from them. Whether it’s Oscar at the front desk or Ricardo, we know them all. Celine will reach out to me to grab a coffee while we’re there. It’s extremely safe and very friendly. As a woman alone, I could walk into town, come back, have a swim, and relax.”

While Sue agrees that each island offers its own culture, hotspots, and unique appeal (“Once you dive in Bonaire, you truly cannot go anywhere else”), she concedes that, “The common denominator has to be the people. On every island, we are humbled by the positivity, warmth, and friendliness we are surrounded by.”

Though they travel at least 3 weeks a year, Sue and her husband have capitalized on the flexibility of their Pure Points to share the joy of travel with family and friends. “I’ve used my extra points to book my daughter an incredible trip to Hawaii, and we used them to book 10 rooms in Vegas for my other daughter’s wedding. It cost me next to nothing. We love that we can do that — and it’s truly such a simple process.”

The Bastarche’s journey with the Divi Vacation Club is a testament to the enriching experiences and cherished memories that come with being a member. Whether it’s diving in Bonaire, exploring the culture in St. Maarten, or enjoying the vibrant life in Aruba, the possibilities are endless and endlessly rewarding.

CELEBRATING ONE YEAR

OF GIVING BACK WITH BAN UNI MAN

In June 2023, we proudly teamed up with Divi Aruba Phoenix’s beloved former general manager, Gerrit Griffith, and Ban Uni Man Pa Cria Nos Muchanan to provide local children on Aruba with a nourishing breakfast to keep them focused and full at school. Here’s how it works: When you stay at Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort, Divi Dutch Village Beach Resort, or Divi Village Beach Resort, we add a dollar for each day of your stay in Aruba to your final bill as a donation to this uplifting organization. 100% of your donations goes directly to this program. Divi Resorts covers all administration costs and credit card fees.

A THANK YOU FROM THE BOARD OF BAN UNI MAN

Dear Guests, Members, an Owners of Divi Resorts Aruba,

We are thrilled to celebrate the 1-year mark of our Divi Cares initiative in partnership with Ban Uni Man Pa Cria Nos Muchanan. Since its launch in June 2023, this program has collected and donated over $136,800 making a significant, invaluable impact on our community.

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility Program, Divi Resorts has been asking for your contributions to support this vital NGO. “Ban Uni Man Pa Cria Nos Muchanan,” freely translates to

“Let’s join hands to feed our children,” and this foundation lives up to its name by providing breakfast, including a sandwich and a drink, to needy children every school day. Currently, hundreds of children across schools in all districts of the island benefit from this program.

Thanks to your generous contributions, we exceed an average of $11,000 per month. This makes you and Divi Resorts the biggest partners in this initiative. On behalf of the children, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support. We hope you will continue to help us ensure the continuity of this essential program.

PAINTING FOR THE ART OF LOVE

During the Bonaire DOET, an annual national volunteer event across the Dutch islands and the European Netherlands, our team at Divi Flamingo joined hands with the local community. The team helped paint containers at the Ace Foundation, an organization that fosters an inspiring art education and nurtures a vibrant community for the love of art and the art of love.

DONATIONS TO THE THE DAMA CULTURAL

Divi Flamingo proudly donated dinners to Kosecha di Diamante, a cultural group of esteemed women. This contribution supported their event, which celebrated the election of the “Dama Cultural” or “The Cultural Lady,” recognizing their contributions to preserving and promoting Bonaire’s rich cultural heritage.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

Vernon Hodge at Divi Little Bay Beach Resort

At Divi Resorts, we are lucky enough to have a solid foundation of loyal, hardworking team members who are dedicated to keeping our resorts running smoothly and our guests happy.

On December 31, 2023, Divi Little Bay Beach Resort celebrated a truly remarkable milestone – Vernon Hodge’s 50 years of unwavering service. Our beloved cook, Vernon, has been with us since 1973, when he joined as an 18-year-old with big dreams and an even bigger work ethic.

Vernon’s journey with Divi Little Bay began half a century ago, and over the years, he has become an iconic figure at the resort. Known for his perfect attendance, hard work, and dedication, Vernon has witnessed and adapted to countless changes in the industry. His commitment to excellence has not only set a standard for all of us but has also been a source of inspiration.

Reflecting on his incredible journey, Vernon shares, “These 50 years have been very great at Divi. I started here at a very, very young age, and I grew up

with the company. It’s like I’m a part of it; that’s why you’ll see me all around the resort fixing things up — I just care for the property so much. I’m happy to be here and I would like to other employees grow and move forward like I did.”

Vernon’s connection to the resort is deeply personal. He has seen many general managers come and go, including Astrid Muller, the first GM he worked under, and the current GM, Anne-Marie Brooks, who started as an intern and has now returned to lead the team. “There’s a lot of history here,” Vernon adds with a laugh. “Anything you want to know about this property, you can ask me.”

As we celebrate Vernon’s 50 years of service, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his loyalty. Thank you, Vernon, for being the cornerstone of our success, and for setting the standard of excellence that inspires us all!
