All classes at Georgia Gwinnett are taught by highquality faculty who are here only because they love to teach. Since our classes are small, they give personal attention that other institutions can’t deliver. If you need help with an assignment or a course, they spend extra time with you, perhaps even over lunch. Our professors don’t have office hours. They are available to you in person or by e-mail, phone and text for questions. And they dont just teach, they mentor. You will be assigned a specific faculty mentor, but all faculty fill this role. Gwinnett County is the second-most populous county in the state of Georgia and boasts of a population in excess of 800,000 people and includes the cities of Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Lawrenceville, which is home to Georgia Gwinnett College, is the county seat. The county contains some of the best entertainment options in the Atlanta metro area, including the Aurora Theatre, which boasts of some of the top stage shows, and the Arena at Gwinnett Center, which has drawn in such acts as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. For the sports fans, in addition to being close to major sports teams in Atlanta, Lawrenceville also has minor league teams in the Gwinnett Braves and Gwinnett Gladiators. For shoppers, Buford’s Mall of Georgia is the largest in the state, and Lawrenceville’s Sugarloaf Mills offers unique dining and entertainment options like Atlanta’s largest Dave & Buster’s and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.

Lawrenceville is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which ranks as the ninth-largest in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accessible cities to visit in the country, it also serves as the cultural and entertainment hub of the Southeast. The city was the host of the 1996 Summer Olympics and boasts of major professional sports teams in the Braves, Falcons and Hawks, and the city will add a Major League Soccer franchise in 2017. Other attractions include the world’s largest aquarium and a number of museums that highlight the historical significance of the city during both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The city also offers some of the best music, dining and shopping attractions in the country.

Georgia Gwinnett College founded the Office of Athletics with the hiring of Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson on July 28, 2011, and over that time, the Grizzlies have become a truly dominant force within the NAIA. The first athletic events took place on August 25, 2012, with a soccer doubleheader against Tennessee Temple, which saw the men and women combine to beat the Crusaders 21-1. The impressive athletic achievements have continued ever since, highlighted by back-to-back NAIA championships by the men’s tennis team. The women’s tennis team also won a national championship in its first season of eligibility in 2014, while men’s soccer, baseball and softball have each taken home A.I.I. titles over the past two seasons. All six Grizzly teams have boasted of All-Americans over the past two years, and five enter the 2015-16 academic year currently ranked among the nation’s top 25.

Inaugural Director of Athletics National Athletics Director of the Year Dr. Darin S. Wilson established the Office of Athletics at Georgia Gwinnett College in late 2011 with the vision of being one of the nation’s premier programs. Off to an incredibly quick start, the Grizzlies are in the process of becoming just that. The Grizzlies seek to develop lifelong leaders of character through academic and athletic excellence, inspired by Wilson’s devotion to the student-athlete experience. He has instilled the program’s five core values of Service, Responsibility, Leadership, Sportsmanship and the Pursuit of Excellence. Committed to the idea of continuing professional development, Wilson holds a number of influential positions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and helps shape policy at the organization’s highest levels. He currently serves on the NAIA’s National Administrative Council, as well as on the NAIA’s Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is on the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent Institutions (AII), of which GGC is a member. Wilson’s drive to provide an unparalleled student-athlete experience committed to character-driven intercollegiate athletics has resulted in tremendous early success for the Grizzlies, who currently field teams in baseball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. During the program’s very first season of postseason eligibility in 2013-14, four of the Grizzlies’ six teams competed in the NAIA national tournament, each reaching a national top-10 ranking. Eighteen players secured All-American status over the course of the year and the men’s and women’s tennis teams delivered GGC’s first-ever national titles on May 17, 2014, in Mobile, Ala. Through two-plus seasons on the field, the Grizzlies have far exceeded expectations with a 271-109-8 (.699) overall record across all sports through fall 2014, earning a pair of conference championships in men’s soccer, plus one each in men’s tennis and baseball. The Grizzlies also have successfully bid for and hosted postseason championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball, with men’s and women’s tennis joining that list in spring 2015. Student-athletes at Georgia Gwinnett College compete at the state-of-the-art Grizzly Athletics Complex, a $15 million facility which features baseball, softball, soccer and tennis complexes, plus a 25,000-square-foot Athletics building with staff offices, team locker rooms, a weight room, training areas, hospitality suites and academic resource space. Wilson was instrumental in the concept, development and construction phases of the entire project, delivering the Grizzlies one of the nation’s elite athletic complexes. Wilson chairs GGC’s intercollegiate athletics committee, and with Wilson’s leadership, Georgia Gwinnett College successfully completed application into the NAIA in April of 2012.

August 25, 2012 marked the historic Opening Day for Grizzly Athletics, with a pair of men’s and women’s soccer victories highlighting the occasion. Wilson looks forward to the athletic program’s continued growth and progress at a rapid rate. Wilson brought a wealth of experience to his position as GGC’s first Director of Athletics, coming from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He had served as the athletics director since 2003, following a five-year stint as baseball coach. His departure ended 18 years of involvement with Union, from an undergraduate student-athlete to leading the athletics program. During Wilson’s time at Union, the college won 47 Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, four Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference titles, and six NAIA Region XII championships. Union was awarded the AAC Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy for the first time in school history in 2010. Forty-seven players were named NAIA ScholarAthletes, and four players were selected as CoSIDA Academic All-America Team members. Wilson oversaw extensive renovation of Union’s sports facilities, including baseball and football locker room remodels, new scoreboards and press boxes, the installation of a $1 million synthetic turf multi-purpose field, and the expansion of athletic training facilities. The athletics overhaul made Union’s facilities some of the best in the NAIA.

Wilson also grew Union’s department of athletics from 15 intercollegiate programs to 23, while effectively revitalizing the athletic booster club and managing a multi-million dollar operational and scholarship budget. For his accomplishments, Wilson was selected as the 2010-11 NAIA National Athletics Director of the Year in the spring of 2012. He was recognized as the AAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, the NAIA Region XII Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, and the 2009-10 NAIA Under Armour AD of the Year for the Southeast Region by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Wilson’s time as a coach and player at Union were marked by success as well. He posted a 161-106-1 baseball coaching record and was named the 2001 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, setting a school record with 41 wins. As an undergraduate, Wilson was selected as Male Athlete of the Year while playing for Union. Wilson has a master’s in education from Union College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He resides in Gwinnett County with his wife, Natalie, and has two children, Drew and Mara.

FACILITIES
The Grizzly Athletics Complex, complete with facilities for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a 25,000-square-foot administration building was completed in 2013. The complex, which is located adjacent to the main entrance to campus, was built in a step-like manner to take advantage of the natural topography and welcome the GGC community and visitors to campus. Grizzly Soccer Complex was the first to open and features a synthetic playing surface, a Daktronics scoreboard and ample bleacher and hillside seating. In the spring of 2013, both the baseball and softball teams opened their stadiums, which feature climatecontrolled press boxes, natural grass fields and full dugouts complete with restrooms. The baseball stadium seats 800 and the softball stadium can accommodate up to 600. The main athletics building hosts the bulk of the GGC coaching staffs and athletics administration. It boasts of locker rooms, conference rooms, a weight room, a sports medicine facility and a dedicated academic support center.

Head Coach First Season Mars Hill ‘92 Georgia Gwinnett College Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson named Chris Kouns as the school’s second-ever women’s soccer head coach on February 18, 2015. With over 22 years of college experience, including nine as a head coach at the NCAA Division I and III levels, the East Point, Ga., native is charged with guiding the GGC program to the next level. Kouns most recently served as head coach at Division III Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where he led the program to three conference titles in four seasons and a place in the 2013 national semifinals. He also has previous head coaching experience in the NAIA. “I am excited to add a coach with his wealth of experience at both the NAIA and NCAA levels to our staff,” Wilson said. “In addition to on-field success, his teams also have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to academic performance. Chris stood out in our national search process and he is tasked with building upon the foundation here to help us reach new levels with our women’s soccer program.” “I am so thankful for the opportunity to join the athletic and academic family at Georgia Gwinnett College,” Kouns said. “To be given a chance to lead a program that is still so young and be able to mold it into something special is something that very few coaches have the opportunity to accomplish. “I think we will be able to compete for conference championships and the chance to advance in the national tournament,” Kouns added. “I’ve been able to accomplish that in the past, and with what GGC already has in place, I’m confident that we can get to the next level and beyond.”

Kouns joins GGC after spending the previous four seasons as head coach at Capital, turning the Crusaders into a perennial Division III contender. His teams captured three Ohio Athletic Conference championships in four seasons, reached the national semifinals once and twice advanced to the NCAA second round. In 2013, Kouns was named OAC Coach of the Year and was a national finalist for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III Coach of the Year. In his time at Capital, he developed a pair of All-Americans and seven all-region honorees, guiding the team to its most-ever wins in a season, its first-ever national tournament victory and first-ever national ranking.
In addition to on-field success, Kouns’ programs have developed a sterling academic reputation. His Capital teams earned national recognition from the NSCAA, posting a 3.0-or-better team grade-point-average each season. In total, Kouns’ teams have taken home the academic award in all nine of his seasons as a head coach.
“Dr. Wilson shares the same kind of vision of national prominence for Georgia Gwinnett, and I want to be a part of the culture of excellence that already exists here with the other five sports,” Kouns said.
A 1992 graduate of Mars Hill College (N.C.), Kouns played soccer for the Lions and was an academic AllAmerican in 1991. He began his coaching career with the Georgia Olympic Development Program and has served in various roles within the ODP over the course of his career. He is active in national coaching education instruction through the NSCAA and is published as part of the World Class Coaching series. Kouns is also active at the club soccer level.
Kouns also brings a wealth of experience from the NCAA Division I ranks, most recently serving as associate head coach for the University of Cincinnati from 2008 to 2010. He spent the preceding four seasons as head coach at Jacksonville University (Fla.), a stint that included an Atlantic Sun Conference title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2006, as well as two other trips to the league championship final. His first head coaching position came at the NAIA level, leading Union College (Ky.) to a conference championship in 1999. Kouns owns an overall head coaching record of 104-7718 in nine seasons. His additional experience includes assistant roles with the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia State University and Samford University.
“I believe in a holistic approach to excellence, not just on the field, but off the field and in the classroom as well,” Kouns explained. “If we do things the right way in all aspects of what we do, the success will come. It’s always about the process more than the destination.”
He and his wife, Tammy Allen-Kouns, have one son, Caden.

Assistant Coach First Season Cincinnati ‘10 After being named head coach of the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer program earlier this year, Chris Kouns added to his staff with the hiring of former NCAA Division I standout Andrea Kaminski as his assistant coach on June 5, 2015. Kaminski both played for and coached alongside Kouns previously. “I knew that Andrea could be an excellent candidate to join our staff,” Kouns said. “Not only is she a terrific coach, but she’s also a great person and role model. Andrea and I have had a relationship that allows her to speak her mind in everything, from line-up suggestions to recruiting and team matters. I am a better coach because of her.” Kaminski, who played for Kouns when he was an assistant at the University of Cincinnati, had spent the last four seasons on his staff at Capital University (Ohio), helping the team to three conference championships and a berth into the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 2013. She worked primarily with the goalkeepers and defense in her time with the Crusaders, helping keeper Maggie Donnellan collect three consecutive conference goalkeeper of the year awards

as well as a pair of all-region honors and an NSCAA All-America designation. “I’m really excited to be joining GGC,” Kaminski said. “I have had a great relationship with Chris, and I’m really excited to get to know the ladies and get ready for this season. I’m a very competitive person, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to help push the program forward.” Kaminski boasts of a wealth of playing experience, beginning with a record-breaking career in goal for Cincinnati. In her four years with the Bearcats, she logged 6,713 minutes in goal and graduated as the school’s all-time saves leader, leading the Big East Conference in the category in both 2006 and 2009. Following her collegiate career, Kaminski competed for the West Virginia Illusion of the W-League and spent time coaching for former U.S. Women’s National Team coach Tony DiCicco with his Soccer Plus Goalkeepeing School. Kaminski graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2010 with a degree in special education.
