president’s report the Future will secure the Museum’s holdings and assets for generations to come, and we will be looking to all who support the Museum to partner with us in this endeavor.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Art Museum, I am pleased to report that the twelve months covered by this report (September 1, 2013–August 31, 2014) were marked by forward-looking initiatives and resolute commitment to the Museum’s future. A prudent business plan and strong earnings from previous years allowed the Museum to finish fiscal year 2014 with a balanced budget. The Museum again delivered a diverse and eye-popping array of exhibitions, including Thomas Sully: Painted Performance, Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art, and Kandinsky: A Retrospective. Special events, tours, lectures, and family programs kept the Museum lively, and despite a harsh winter, the Museum saw nearly 350,000 visitors, and membership continued to be strong. I credit the hard-working staff, volunteers, docents, and leadership for the success of the Museum in the face of unpredictable circumstances. Notably, in partnership with Milwaukee County, the Museum unveiled its designs for the renovations planned as part of the restoration project of the Saarinen and Kahler buildings. The plans include: an upgraded HVAC system; a watertight roof; brighter, bigger galleries that are easier to navigate; stunning lake views and lakeside access to the galleries; additional rest areas; and a dedicated photography and video floor. This is an ambitious $31 million project, for which Milwaukee County has committed $10 million. As of this writing, the Museum has raised 95% of the remaining funds, and the work to repair and restore these buildings has begun. Our Plan for

We are also deeply grateful to the community partners whose financial support allowed us to not only present world-class art but also provide a variety of enrichment opportunities, including education programs to more than 60,000 schoolchildren from across the region. I am proud to share our accomplishments, thanks to support from our corporate sponsors, Business Circle and President’s Circle Members, individual donors, support groups, and, of course, Museum Members. And I want to thank the Museum staff, volunteers, docents, and Board of Trustees for their help in accomplishing our goals. Their dedication and commitment are invaluable. We are preparing for the future, so that we may continue to engage our visitors for generations to come. The next fiscal year will bring some changes, as construction begins in earnest and the Collection Galleries are off view, but the Museum promises a stunning lineup of exhibitions and an ever-active Quadracci Pavilion, with MAM After Dark, Beauty in Bloom, Lakefront Festival of Art, Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sundays, and more. I am excited for the opportunities ahead, and our foundation is solid. Thank you again for your support, and I look forward to seeing you often at the Museum.

director’s report Dear Members and Friends of the Museum, I am pleased to report that the Milwaukee Art Museum finished fiscal year 2014 (September 1, 2013–August 31, 2014) having met all its major goals. The Museum is on firm financial ground thanks to the support of thousands of contributors, major donors, and corporate sponsors and hundreds of thousands of visitors. Though balanced budgets, high attendance, community engagement, and satisfied visitors may seem to be givens for the Museum, they actually come by way of a talented, hard-working staff and dedicated supporters. This past fiscal year saw the achievement of several major milestones for the Museum and the community we serve. Chief among them are the historic renovations and repairs of the older Milwaukee County–owned buildings of the Museum. The capital campaign, A Plan for the Future, was far enough along that the Board of Trustees approved commencing the construction process, with an estimated completion date of late fall 2015. As you may know, this complicated and critical project not only makes the needed repairs to the Saarinen and Kahler buildings but also expands our reach by reopening an east entrance at the lake through a new addition. This unique opportunity to restore and preserve these buildings also allows us to reinstall the galleries and reimagine how you the visitor experience the art. It is no exaggeration that, when the project is completed, you will see an entirely new Museum. The staff of the Museum, along with the Board of Trustees, rolled up their sleeves and embraced the task of this major renovation. I am deeply indebted to the staff for their unflinching enthusiasm and hard work in this endeavor. I am grateful to our Members, whose continued support makes this project possible. Finally, I am deeply honored to have the trust and vote of confidence from the Board of Trustees, which whole-heartedly endorsed and supported the campaign, along with the operational needs of the Museum. I especially wish to acknowledge Board President Ken Krei for his unstoppable leadership this past year. Ken, along with Chairman and past president Ray Krueger, was intimately

involved in all aspects of the campaign, County negotiations, and the seemingly daily issues associated with important opportunities and challenges of this Museum initiative. I am particularly pleased that, through the generosity of the Layton Collection Inc., its Board of Directors led by President Eric Vogel, and Layton Collection Works of Art Committee Chairman Fred Vogel, the Museum will continue to present the Layton Collection, one of the community’s finest assets, to Museum visitors for years to come. This founding collection has been on loan from the Layton Collection Inc. from the beginning of the Museum’s location on the lakefront in the 1950s. It represents the origins of art experiences in Milwaukee, dating back to the Layton Art Gallery founded in 1888. Great art, world-class exhibitions, rejuvenated buildings and programs, new visitor experiences, and nationally recognized education all add up to a new Milwaukee Art Museum. curatorial report During this year, the Museum finalized plans for a transformative project to renovate and reinstall its Collection Galleries. Construction will begin in 2015, so the Curatorial Department was actively engaged in refining the plans for this major endeavor throughout 2014. The Museum also presented powerful exhibitions and continued to grow the Collection with exceptional acquisitions. The Museum was pleased to welcome Brandon Ruud as its new Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts. Brandon joined the Museum in April 2014 from the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he served as curator of American art. Brandon is well underway planning the American galleries for the Museum’s reinstallation as well as developing exciting exhibitions and acquisitions for the Museum. In September 2013, the Museum lost one of its most inspired collectors and supporters, Granvil (Gig) Specks. Gig was a passionate and knowledgeable art collector. He and his wife, Marcia, have cultivated one of the most important collections of German Expressionist prints in the nation. Gifts and loans of artwork from the Specks have stirred countless visitors to the Museum’s Marcia and Granvil Specks Collection Gallery. Friends and family collaborated to design a memorial installation in honor of Gig in the Specks Gallery, April–June 2014. In August 2014, dear friend and supporter of the Museum Constance Pember Godfrey passed away. Constance and her husband, Dudley Godfrey Jr., assembled one of the most important private collections of colonial American furniture and early British decorative arts in the country. The Godfreys were major donors to the Museum and generous supporters of conservation, exhibitions, and publications throughout the country. Most of their gifts were made quietly and anonymously, but their impact on American decorative arts scholarship is substantial and continues today. Constance filled important leadership roles in the decorative arts community, serving as a founding member of the Museum’s American Arts Society and a trustee of the Layton Art Collection for over forty years.

Acquisitions

Contemporary Art The Contemporary Art Society hosted a fundraising event in the contemporary galleries on August 13, 2014. With their support, the Museum acquired Anthony McCall’s light installation You and I Horizontal (II) (2006), which will be highlighted in the Museum’s renovated galleries in 2015. Anthony McCall has been a key figure in avantgarde cinema and light installations since the 1970s. His installations harness the tools of cinema—projector, image, and light source—with the volume of the gallery itself serving as the screen. In You and I Horizontal (II), the thirty-three-minute projection of two convex white lines is given immersive form by the haze machine that introduces fine particles of moisture in the room. Niki Johnson’s Eggs Benedict (2013) was a generous gift of Joseph R. Pabst’s and added an important Wisconsinbased artist to the Museum’s contemporary art collection. Niki Johnson creates socially relevant sculptures using mass-produced materials. Eggs Benedict, a portrait of the former Pope Benedict, received international media attention for its critique of Vatican views. With funds from the Leonard and Bebe LeVine Art Acquisition Fund, the Museum acquired a work by Israeli video and installation artist Michal Rovner. In Har Zeitim II (Mount of Olives II) (2012), images of Cyprus trees stand architectural and totemic, and sway in the breeze amid rows of moving figures. Rovner filmed the ancient species of Mediterranean plants at the Mount of Olives, the biblical cemetery on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The video footage is projected onto an ancient paver stone from the same region. Trained as a dancer, Rovner choreographed the movements of the individuals. The effect, as it appears on the white limestone, recalls the earliest historical writings, cuneiform tablets from the seventh century BC.

Photographs The Museum acquired a wonderful variety of photographs this year, among them a vintage dye transfer print “Wet ‘n’ Wild” Aquatic Theme Park, Orlando, Florida, September 1980 (1980) by Joel Sternfeld from his personal collection, purchased with funds from the Herzfeld Foundation Acquisition Fund. Another print of this picture had been on view in the Museum’s 2013 exhibition Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America. The Museum also benefited from its Postcards from America: Milwaukee exhibition this year, acquiring several photographs by Magnum photographers featured in the exhibition such as Alora. Black River Falls, Wisconsin (2014) by Alessandra Sanguinetti; Mary, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2014) by Alec Soth; and The Preparatory City. Marquette Interchange. Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2014) by Donovan Wylie. The Museum also added the beautiful North Dakota (Moonrise at Garage) photographs, from the series A Shimmer of Possibility (2005) by Paul Graham, with the Croasdaile acquisition fund in memory of Betty Croasdaile and John E. Julien. European Art There were several wonderful additions to the European art collection, such as the French genre painting The Music Lesson (1796) by Martin Drölling and a stunning pair of paintings of Saints Monica and her son, Augustine, by nineteenth-century French academic painter Alexandre Cabanel. A striking vase designed by Louis-Constant Sévin, Monumental Ormolu-Mounted Enamel Vase (1867), was purchased with funds from Avis Martin Heller and the Fine Arts Society and is an extraordinary example of the work of the Maison Barbedienne, which was one of the most important art foundries in France in the nineteenth century. A large gift of works on paper from Jean Friedlander included James Tissot’s etching The Hammock (1880), and a bequest of Dorothy Trommel’s added eleven German vessels to enhance the Museum’s collection. A 1660s English Beadwork Basket was purchased for the Museum with funds from the Virginia Booth Vogel Acquisition Fund and is an elaborate example of Stuart needlework.

American Art The Museum received a generous gift from the collection of David and Marion Meissner of an Everett Shinn painting, Boudoir (ca. 1910), an excellent addition to the Museum’s holdings of The Eight. With the Croasdaile acquisition fund, the Museum purchased a sterling silver “Polar” Ice Bowl (ca. 1870) by Gorham Manufacturing Company, an important addition to the fifteen silver objects by the company in the Museum’s collection. Through a significant bequest of Dr. Lucille Cohn, including one drawing and eight prints, the Museum now holds thirty-four works on paper by the artist Misch Kohn. 20th-Century Design The Museum acquired a wonderful selection of design objects this year. A gift from Daniel Morris, the Marcel Breuer–designed B55 Armchair (ca. 1929), a very rare example of Breuer’s early manufactured furniture design, entered the Museum’s design collection. “No. 19” Armchair (ca. 1934), a chair designed by Gilbert Rohde, with the original upholstery designed by Dorothy Liebes, was purchased with funds from the Edward U. Demmer Foundation. “Flexible Home Arrangements” Nesting Tables (ca. 1940), designed by J. Robert F. Swanson and Pipsan Saarinen Swanson with Eliel Saarinen, was also purchased with funds from the Edward U. Demmer Foundation and is the first collaborative work in the collection by the three artists. The acquisition ties nicely to Milwaukee’s design history, as the first iteration of the Milwaukee County War Memorial Building at its Prospect Avenue location was a design collaboration in 1947 by Saarinen, Swanson, and Saarinen. The Museum was very pleased to be able to purchase a Maija Grotell vase (ca. 1940s) in memory of former decorative arts curator Cheryl Robertson, which was generously funded by the Edward U. Demmer Foundation. A stunning ironwork by Samuel Yellin, Grille (20th century), was a gift of Leeds Art Foundation in honor of Barbara and Henry Fuldner.

Self-Taught Art The Museum’s considerable holdings of self-taught art expanded with two important gifts this year. Through a gift from Pat Glascock and Michael D. Hall in memory of Jill Irene Allen, the Museum added a Jose Mondragon carved wood sculpture, Saint Cajetan (ca. 1972), to its folk art collection. A gift from the Anthony Petullo Foundation of a James Lloyd work on paper, Outside the Rovers Return (Coronation Street) (ca. 1962), was another welcomed addition, which serves to illustrate another, lesser-known aspect of the artist’s work.

MUSEUM LIBRARY/ARCHIVES

The Milwaukee Art Museum’s George Peckham Miller Art Research Library continued to serve the research needs of Museum staff, docents, students, teachers, and scholars through the acquisition of vital library resources. Through generous support from the Alice and Lucia Stern Library Fund, the Mae E. Demmer Charitable Trust, the international catalogue exchange program, and numerous private donations, the library added important resources to its research collection. In fiscal year 2014, the library acquired the three volume Catalogue and Analysis of Eighteenth-Century French Prints after Netherlandish Baroque Paintings, along with the Four Artists of the Stieglitz Circle: A Sourcebook on Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, and Max Weber and Bending the Frame: Photojournalism, Documentary, and the Citizen, among others.

CONSERVATION

The Conversation Department secured an IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) grant toward the update and renovation of the central paintings vault, providing for more efficient art storage for the Museum’s Collection. The department was also integral in preparing and packing the entire Collection in anticipation of the Museum’s renovation and reinstallation project.

COLLECTION PARTNERSHIPS

Layton Art Collection The Layton Art Collection, Inc., is the legacy of the Layton Art Gallery, founded in 1888 by civic leader Frederick Layton. The Layton Art Gallery was the first purpose-built, public art gallery in the city of Milwaukee; later, it also operated a successful art school. In 1957, the Layton Art Gallery closed its location near Cathedral Square and moved the Layton collection, together with the Milwaukee Art Institute, into the newly constructed War Memorial Center, which was founded as an art center and a war memorial. In subsequent decades, the Layton Art Collection, in partnership with the now Milwaukee Art Museum, has continued to acquire works of art for the benefit of the residents of and visitors to Milwaukee. The Layton Art Collection maintains a separate Board of Trustees, which has placed the collection on loan to the Museum since 1957. The Chipstone Foundation The Chipstone Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Fox Point, Wisconsin. Milwaukee collectors Stanley and Polly Mariner Stone founded Chipstone in 1965 with the mission to collect early American decorative arts and promote scholarship in the field. The foundation’s holdings of early American furniture, historical prints, and British pottery continue to be creatively displayed and interpreted within the Museum’s Collection. Chipstone has been collaborating with curatorial staff to plan the installation of the renovated decorative arts galleries. Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and SC Johnson Company The Museum provided its expertise to an important community partner whose home is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpieces—SC Johnson Company. In collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the Museum served as a consultant on the exhibition The Two Taliesins, installed in the Frank Lloyd Wright Gallery at the company’s headquarters in Racine, and also helped SCJ launch the re-opening of its renovated Wrightdesigned Research Tower, closed for over three decades.

Thomas Sully: Painted Performance Oct 11, 2013–Jan 5, 2014 Curated by Dr. William Keyse Rudolph, Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts and director of exhibitions, and Dr. Carol Eaton Soltis, project associate curator of American Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art American painter Thomas Sully had a lifelong connection to and love of the theatre and literature. Thomas Sully: Painted Performance revealed these as critical components of his artistic imagination, celebrating the artist’s unique contribution to the nation’s artistic and cultural life. Through the lens of theater and literature, Sully’s portraits and numerous subject pictures took on a striking coherence, complementing each other and revealing not only the breadth but also the unity of the artist’s career. This exhibition brought together seventy-three works from public and private collections to provide a fresh and more nuanced understanding of one of America’s most accomplished and innovative early painters. Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art Jan 31–May 4, 2014 Curated by Margaret Andera, adjunct curator The authentically American artistic expression identified in the work of folk and self-taught artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries gave American art its own voice separate from the classical European style that dominated the art world at the time. These artists, operating outside the art establishment, created work that was influenced by their communities and cultural traditions, rather than by art historical movements. Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art celebrated this independent streak in American art and highlighted the full depth and breadth of the Museum’s world-class collection of folk and self-taught art, from nineteenth-century drawings to contemporary quilts from Gee’s Bend, Alabama.

Kandinsky: A Retrospective June 5–Sept 1, 2014 Organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Centre Pompidou, Paris; co-curated by Brady Roberts, chief curator, and Angela Lampe, curator of modern art at the Centre Pompidou, Paris For this exhibition, the Museum partnered with the Centre Pompidou, one of the major repositories of Wassily Kandinsky’s work, to trace the development of this extraordinary and inventive artist, from his early figurative works to his abstract paintings. The Centre Pompidou’s remarkable collection came from the artist’s widow, Nina, and is composed of the artist’s favorite works, which he kept for himself. Curated from this rich trove, this retrospective featured over one hundred paintings, drawings, and other works, including a mural that Kandinsky designed during his Bauhaus years—a piece that was presented in the United States for the first time at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Works from the Museum’s Bradley Collection gave context to Kandinsky’s critical Blaue Reiter period. Alive with color and rhythm, Kandinsky’s distinctive, abstract style made him one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Flow: The 2014 NCECA Ceramic Arts Invitational Feb 22–March 23, 2014 Co-curated by Mel Buchanan, former Demmer Assistant Curator of 20th-Century Design and current RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts & Design at the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Linda Ganstrom, professor of art at Fort Hayes State University in Kansas In 2014, Milwaukee hosted one of the largest arts organizations in the country, the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) for its 48th Annual Conference. The Museum celebrated these five thousand visiting potters by presenting Flow: The 2014 NCECA Ceramic Arts Invitational. In this juried exhibition, clay artists addressed the idea of “flow” and its range of meaning: the literal flow of water and glaze, the artistic flow of a painted line, and the conceptual flow of ideas.

Currents 36: Dirk Skreber Nov 7, 2013–March 2, 2014 Curated by Margaret Andera, adjunct curator, and Brady Roberts, chief curator German artist Dirk Skreber is best known for his paintings and sculptures that portray catastrophic events. His paintings of aerial views of buildings submerged in floodwaters and of violent car accidents are depicted with a calm detachment that infuses the work with an uncomfortable tension. His monumental sculptures of cars wrapped around poles present the extensive and horrific damage of a car crash, often within the dissipated setting of an art gallery. It is not the disaster depicted that is the disconcerting element in Skreber’s work, but rather the neutrality with which the scenes are presented. Currents 36: Dirk Skreber featured several of the artist’s large-scale paintings, one monumental sculpture—installed outdoors, between the Museum and the lake—and his first video work, Turgidity. Postcards from America: Milwaukee July 10–Nov 2, 2014 Curated by Lisa Sutcliffe, curator of photography Postcards from America: Milwaukee was the first museum exhibition of photographs from the Postcards from America project, which a group of photographers, members of the international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos, initiated to foster artistic and intellectual collaboration. The Postcards from America project has taken the artists through the Southwest; over the mountains to Utah; to Rochester, New York; and to Florida during the last Presidential election. For this iteration of the series, the Museum partnered with eleven artists (Bruce Gilden, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Jacob Aue Sobol, Alec Soth, Zoe Strauss, and Donovan Wylie), who visited the Wisconsin region in three stages from August 2013 to April 2014. Each shared his or her distinctive perspective on subjects ranging from the State Fair and highway infrastructure to students in Black River Falls and women laborers. The Bloemaert Legacy March 11–June 11, 2014 Curated by Tanya Paul, Isabel and Alfred Bader Curator of European Art This focus exhibition explored the deep impact artist Abraham Bloemaert had on Dutch painting during his extensive eightyfive-year career. The intimate display featured two paintings by Bloemaert on loan to the Museum from the collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader, alongside works by his students from the Museum’s Collection. The exhibition explored Bloemaert’s painting style as it evolved throughout his lifetime, from a brightly colored, almost abstract Mannerist style to the dramatic lighting and directness of the Caravaggist style. Bloemaert’s adaptability was a testament to his great artistic skill and his willingness to continue to learn as well as teach. Exhibition brochure sponsored by Isabel and Alfred Bader.

The Postcards from America project fosters collaboration with each community it visits. In Milwaukee, twentynine students from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee served as assistants to the visiting artists, providing fieldwork and research support as the artists created their work for the Postcards from America: Milwaukee exhibition. As part of their coursework, the MIAD and UWM students explored their own impressions of Milwaukee. A selection of their work using video, installation, computer-generated sound and image, and photography was on display in this accompanying exhibition.

As a child of actors, American painter Thomas Sully had a lifelong connection to the theater that informed his imagination. His portraits of nineteenth-century actors, celebrities, royalty, and politicians established his reputation and would mark all his works, particularly his “fancy pictures,” portraits evoking scenes from literature, fairy tales, Shakespeare, or of his own devising. This catalogue demonstrates how the artist interpreted the nature of painting as performance, manifested in his dramatic productions. Three essays, 160 color reproductions, and an illustrated chronology survey and elucidate his career.

This companion catalogue to the exhibition Currents 36: Dirk Skreber features a carefully considered essay by Will Heinrich, an interview with the artist, and photographs of the installation. German artist Dirk Skreber depicts natural disasters, catastrophic events, and ominous scenes of vague but impending danger, but with a calm detachment that infuses his work with a peculiar tension. This catalogue examines Skreber’s exploration of seemingly contradictory ideas such as abstraction and figuration, beauty and calamity, through paintings, sculptures, and video.

education + public programs In fiscal year 2014, the Education Department introduced 455,000 participants of all ages to the Museum’s collections through on- and off-site programs designed for families, schools, teachers, and adult visitors. At the heart of the Museum’s family programs is the Kohl’s Art Generation program. The Kohl’s Education Center in the Museum, with its gallery, lab, and studio, provided families with a variety of hands-on ways to explore and create art. On view in the Kohl’s Art Generation Gallery was Illusions: Near and Far, which familiarized families to the technologies and techniques artists have used to create the illusion of depth. In the Kohl’s Art Generation Lab, videos and touch screens gave families a behind-thescenes look at working at the Museum, from framing a work of art to X-raying a painting. The Kohl’s Art Generation Studio offered drop-in weekend visitors a new opportunity each week to create works of art. Outside of the Museum, Kohl’s Color Wheels took hands-on art activities on the road to 115 area festivals and schools throughout the year.

Families also used iPod Touch Tours to explore the collections, ArtPacks to engage with single works of art, and activity-filled Family Guides to learn about the feature exhibitions. They heard stories related to works of art and participated in the festive Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sundays events, with art making, performances, special guests, and more, five times a year. Play Date with Art introduced our youngest visitors, to age 5, to the Museum through song, dance, and art making. The Museum served teachers and students through a range of tours and special programs, and expanded its reach to 930 schools, up from 627 schools in fiscal year 2013. Collaborations with the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum, Discovery World, First Stage Children’s Theater, Lynden Sculpture Garden, Milwaukee Ballet, and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra continued to bring a multidisciplinary approach to the tours and programs. With a focus on literacy through the arts, the Museum provided training to teachers in the National Writing Project summer institute, transformed its galleries into a writing lab for the Art of Writing program, and partnered with SHARP Literacy Inc. to develop students’ ability to read. Free admission to the Museum for Wisconsin K–12 teachers has substantially deepened its reach into schools. Adults participated in classes, music events, and lectures. Special programs held in conjunction with the feature exhibitions brought artists to life, such as in a performance of the letters between Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky (Kandinsky: A Retrospective), and attracted new audiences with a Duck Decoy Day (Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art). In the galleries, visitors slowed down and took an hour each week to look carefully and discuss works of art through classes and Slow Art Saturdays. Art in Bloom and MAM After Dark remained popular social events among adults and young professionals. The Museum is grateful for the corps of dedicated volunteer docents who made it possible for the Museum to provide this range and abundance of programs.

development Every Gift Counts The Museum’s ability to present consistently outstanding exhibitions, leading educational programs, and a worldclass Collection of more than 30,000 works would not be possible without the generous support of its donors. All gifts—large and small—are critical to the Museum and its efforts to enrich the cultural life in the community. The Museum continues to operate without a sufficient endowment and is not eligible for support from federated fund drives such as UPAF or United Way; as such, it again relied heavily on contributed revenue for its operations in all areas in 2013–14. The Museum’s fundraising successes in fiscal year 2014, therefore, reflect the region’s commitment to a world-class art museum for Milwaukee.

Members had access to a variety of exclusive events and first-look opportunities throughout the year. In November, new Members were invited to a welcome event to learn more about the Museum from Director Dan Keegan. During the annual Member appreciation month in May, the Museum treated Members to curator-led tours, deeper discounts in the Museum Store and Café Calatrava, and a lecture series with Barbara Brown Lee. Among the trips Members took this year was a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago to see Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938. Members were also among the first to learn about the exciting details for the Museum’s ambitious Plan for the Future, a project to restore, reinstall, and reimagine the Collection Galleries.

Annual Fund

Support Groups Membership also affords Members the opportunity to join any of the nine support groups, all of which are busy throughout the year with activities related to a specific interest area within the Museum’s Collection. More than four hundred Members are involved in support groups.

The Annual Fund continues to be the single largest source of funding for Museum operations. More than 21,000 supporters contributed a total of $4,884,167 to the fund this fiscal year. Led by Development Committee Chairs Ellen Glaisner and Wendy Blumenthal, a dedicated group of trustees and a committee of volunteers once again produced a successful annual campaign.

Membership

Museum membership remained strong in fiscal year 2014, with over 20,000 households representing more than 30,000 Members. The Museum is proud to have such a committed group of supporters, whose participation and generosity are integral to the Museum and to ensuring that, as a communitygathering place, the Museum stays vibrant all year long. Comprising 35 percent of the Museum’s annual attendance in 2013–14, Members took full advantage of their most valuable benefit, free and unlimited admission to the Museum. Members also continued to enjoy previews of the feature exhibitions, as well as discounts in the Museum Store and Café Calatrava, and on classes, special events such as Lakefront Festival of Art and Art in Bloom, and parking passes.

African American Art Alliance (founded 1990) supports educational programs centering on African American art and artists, promotes volunteer involvement in the Museum, and is dedicated to raising funds for purchasing African American art for the Museum’s Collection. American Arts Society (founded 1993) celebrates American art, antiques, and architecture from the colonial era into the twentieth century through educational programs, trips, exhibitions, and conservation efforts. The Collectors’ Corner (founded 1948) is committed to developing educational programs that promote knowledge and important scholarship in the decorative arts. Contemporary Art Society (founded 1982) promotes the appreciation of contemporary art through the sponsorship of programs that bring renowned artists, critics, and curators to the Museum; by supporting acquisitions; and by sponsoring exhibitions of contemporary art at the Museum.

Fine Arts Society (founded 1987) is a group of Europeanart enthusiasts that sponsors and supports related programs, exhibitions, and acquisitions by the Museum. Friends of Art (founded 1957) is the Museum’s largest volunteer support group. Hundreds of volunteers work to present FOA events, such as Lakefront Festival of Art, that engage the community, expand the Museum’s audience, and generate funds to support exhibitions at the Museum and the acquisition of artworks for its Collection. Garden Club (founded 1921) is the largest member club of the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation. The club supports the Museum through the annual Art in Bloom event and other activities. Photography Council (founded 1988) is devoted to the Museum’s photography collection and exhibition program and allows Museum Members with an interest in the art and history of photography to enrich their knowledge of the medium through an annual program of special events. Print Forum (founded 1980) unites Museum Members with an interest in prints and drawings from the Renaissance to today. It sponsors exhibitions, lectures, and seminars and provides support for the acquisition of prints, drawings, and artists’ books for the Museum’s Collection. The Museum is very fortunate to have such longstanding, supportive Members. Their generosity directly affects the breadth and depth of the Museum’s programs, including acquisitions, exhibitions, lectures, and special events, keeping the Museum vibrant. For this, the Museum is deeply grateful.

President’s Circle

Every great institution has a circle of leading supporters dedicated to its success. At the Museum, that group is the President’s Circle, comprised of individuals, families, and businesses that contribute $2,500 or more to the Annual Fund. In fiscal year 2014, 273 President’s Circle Members gave $2.8 million. Members place high value

on enriching one’s family, social, and work life through creativity and exposure to alternate ways of seeing the world, and they participated in the Museum’s programs as avidly as they supported them. They attended the President’s Circle Preview for each feature exhibition, intimate curator talks, special day trips, private studio tours, and the Museum’s best receptions and parties. Everyone, in the Museum and the community, benefits from the tremendous generosity of the President’s Circle Members. This group has helped make the Museum what it is today, and helps ensure that the Museum continues to thrive for generations to come. Thank you!

Sponsorship Support

The generous contributions and sponsorship of foundations, corporations, and individuals are vital to the Museum’s ability to maintain the caliber of its exhibitions, education programs, and public events. Sponsorship not only provides much-needed support, but also builds visibility and awareness of the sponsor’s brand, affords business-building opportunities, and offers memorable hospitality experiences for clients and employees. Again this year, the Museum received strong sponsorship support. Thanks to funding from Kohl’s Department Stores, the Museum continued to offer families engaging, hands-on programming designed just for them, through its Kohl’s Education Center and the Kohl’s Art Generation program. Target Free First Thursdays was invaluable in opening the Museum’s doors to those who might not otherwise visit. And the support of area businesses, foundations, and philanthropists helped the Museum present the exhibitions Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art, Kandinsky: A Retrospective, Postcards from America: Milwaukee, and Currents 36: Dirk Skreber, as well as the related programming. Popular events such as MAM After Dark, Family Sundays, Art in Bloom, and the Lakefront Festival of Art were again all made possible for thousands of Museum visitors to enjoy thanks to the commitment of generous sponsors.

The Plan for the Future Campaign

The Museum continued to successfully raise funds for its Plan for the Future capital campaign. The plan calls for making repairs and renovations to the oldest part of the Museum’s campus, the County-owned buildings that house the Museum’s Collection, and upgrading the Museum’s facilities to improve the visitor experience. The Plan for the Future is bold, but necessary, as it aims to ensure that the Museum remains an extraordinary institution, able to serve and inspire the generations to come. Among the improvements slated for completion in late 2015: • New lakeside entrance, with direct access to parking • Galleries that are brighter and easier to navigate • A dedicated photography and new media area • More places to rest, refresh, and socialize, including a new lakeside coffee shop • Restrooms on every floor

Legacy Society

More than ninety Museum supporters have promised gifts through their estate plans. Using wills, trusts, insurance, retirement plans, or other assets, planned giving donors receive valuable tax advantages while providing support that benefits Museum visitors for generations to come. Most monies received will build the Museum’s endowment fund, which generated only 8 percent of the annual operating budget in fiscal year 2013, trailing most comparable U.S. art museums. Members of the Legacy Society enjoy many program and event benefits and have the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping an institution continue to inspire all ages through art, in perpetuity. financial report Financially, the Milwaukee Art Museum concluded fiscal year 2014 with a balanced budget and a strong balance sheet, with no debt as of August 31, 2014. Net assets are approximately $146 million as of year-end. The following are among the highlights of the 2014 operating year: • T he Museum Store, Café Calatrava, and facility rentals saw continued success; all contributed a gross profit of almost $2.4 million, approximately the same as the prior year. • Goals for the annual campaign and membership were met and approximated the same level of giving as the prior year. • Major progress was made on the Plan for the Future campaign, with over $16 million raised as of August 31, 2014.

The investment portfolio experienced strong performance in 2014, gaining approximately $4.9 million in market value from the prior year. The total market value of investments was $51.3 million in 2014, compared to $46.7 million in 2013. The Museum’s ability to raise and earn revenues sufficient to cover operating expenses will continue to be a challenge in the years ahead. As the Museum plans for its future, successfully accomplishing its goals will depend on continuing to expand the visitor experience, grow its Member and donor base, and build a larger endowment. The Museum has identified several planned gifts that will help build the endowment in the years ahead.
