The Future Belongs to Those With Range Deep Knowledge is being increasingly dominated by specialist AI. As a result, the role of the generalist becomes even more significant. AI excels at deep, focused expertise within narrow domains, but it often lacks the ability to see the bigger picture or connect across fields. Generalists—those with “range”—are essential in connecting diverse fields to solve multifaceted problems. David Epstein’s Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World highlights the power of generalists who draw on broad experiences to outpace narrowly focused peers. In today’s fast-evolving landscape, building highly skilled, cross-disciplinary teams is no longer just an advantage but a necessity. These teams, composed of individuals who bridge different disciplines, are better equipped to innovate and adapt, allowing organizations to respond swiftly to new challenges. I think this observation reinforces the importance of hiring people who possess broad range of expertise and the agility to connect with other disciplines. These team members act as bridges, ensuring that organizations can leverage the full spectrum of knowledge. This holistic approach to team-building is what sets successful organizations apart in an era where innovation thrives at the intersection of ideas. The 20th century’s belief in the division of labor, effective in an industrial era focused on efficiency, is increasingly outdated. Today’s challenges often require an integrated approach, and organizations that cling to the old model risk becoming obsolete. We must build organizations that act more like ecosystems and less like machines. In an ecosystem, every part is interconnected, and success depends on the health and adaptability of the whole. By fostering an environment where knowledge (and people) is not tied to a specific discipline, the organization can become more resilient and innovative. We need to de-emphasize functional structures. Traditional, hierarchical models prevent people from getting around whole problems. They hide information, obscure systemic problems, and disincentivize engagement in anything but one’s area of expertise. Organizations that encourage people to work in a cross-functional team, measuring performance by the outcome of an end-to-end value stream empower and incentivize people with Range.

So many businesses argue productivity when they force employees back into their physical spaces. But in my own experience, being in the office does NOT make workers more productive. Flexibility does.
