Join Apple, and help us leave the world better than we found it! The Data Center Operations group is looking for a Data Center Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for deploying and maintaining servers, networking equipment and other devices together with installing and supporting fibre and copper infrastructure in our Data Centers located in Japan and South Korea. In this role you will focus on developing and sustaining solutions through communication and coordination with Apple Data Center teams and Business Groups to help deliver a solid infrastructure and services to meet global business objectives. We seek a self-starter, visionary team player with strong infrastructure cabling capabilities to drive standards as well as innovative methodologies to achieve these objectives.

Description

In this role, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks related to the deployment and maintenance of compute servers and network infrastructure in our data center environments in Japan and South Korea. Your duties will encompass cabling infrastructure and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) elements. Your responsibilities will include performing cable installations, hardware installations, as well as testing and troubleshooting using standard data center processes. You'll be expected to physically assist in moving and racking equipment, and support the deployment of on-site data center physical infrastructure, including servers, network switches, and storage devices. Vendor management will be a part of your role, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and quality standards. You'll also assist the data center inventory and asset management team with shipping, receiving, and inventory management. You'll work with and support the overall ticket management process, performing tasks such as power cycles, swapping out failed components, handling storage media, cabling requests and troubleshooting issues. Your ability to assess and triage work requests, provide planning details, and assist in prioritizing and coordinating service delivery will be vital. Identifying issues and performing Root Cause Analysis to prevent future operational impacts will also fall under your purview. Strong attention to detail and effective documentation skills are critical components of success in this position. Lastly, you'll be expected to establish and enhance strong working relationships with various internal teams and external suppliers, contributing to a collaborative and efficient work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience (3+ years) with progressive responsibilities within an international, multi-cultural, multi-location organization.
  • Expertise with data center operational tasks, including rack sizing, construction, equipment installation and decommissioning. Willing to do hands-on activities.
  • Hands-on experience with various copper and fiber cabling structures, cable infrastructure design and labeling methodology.
  • Expertise with break-fix and incident management.
  • Experience with DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) tools. Hands-on operations in securing and monitoring equipment with enterprise level management tools.
  • Proficient in English (preferably Eiken level 2 or above). Test scores are a good guide, but it’s your willingness and ability to work in a multilingual, multicultural environment that’s most important.
  • Must be eligible to work in Japan at time of application.

  • Technical certifications preferred (e.g. CompTIA,, BICSI, CNet, IDCA qualifications) or related experience.
  • Self-motivated and the ability to take direction with minimal supervision and capable of independent problem solving.
  • Strong communicator at all levels with excellent oral and written skills to a variety of audiences.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel within and outside of Japan and provide on call / out of business hours to respond to and resolve urgent business issues.
  • Proven ability to manage key stakeholder interests while at the same time managing conflicting priorities and business interests.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, established techniques, and equipment.
  • Japanese (preferably JLPT N2 or above) would also be a bonus.
